🫖 The secret's out. You may have heard that tea is having a hard time due to climate change, and you would've heard correctly.
Delicate teas need specific rainfall and temperatures during their growing season to thrive, and to take on the flavours one would expect. Climate change and its unpredictably is making it harder for growers to know how the crop will turn out.
Climate change is reshaping entire growing regions, and global tea production.
How does this affect a tea drinker?
Well for starters:
Delicate teas like Darjeeling are harder to procure, resulting in later shipments if the crop survives these unpredictable conditions.
Flavours you've come to love will start to become different as the flavour profile develops differently due to the conditions.
Key tea producing regions will no longer be able to produce the tea due to weather conditions and pests, causing new regions to be established, changing entire economies.
Good growing regions are becoming smaller, resulting in less farmable land to produce tea, resulting in less tea being available to the average consumer.
All of these factors then stress the supply chain and increase prices.
Science has begun working on researching how tea can best survive this change, whether it be through modification or adapting environments, but tea is no easy plant to relocate.
