Happy Canada Day from The Hungry Traveler Cafe! 🇨🇦
Please note: The cafe will be closed today so that our team can take a well-deserved break and spend some quality time with their families. I am so looking forward to heading down to the beautiful Lunenburg waterfront with my own family today to celebrate one of our absolute favorite holidays together!
As we gather to celebrate, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on what it truly means to be Canadian...
Roots, Choices, and Identity
This week at the cafe, a conversation arose where someone directly questioned my identity, insisting and pushing the narrative that I must be Syrian. I am not. But the interaction stayed with me, especially given the discussions I’ve seen online lately about who "belongs" here, what Canadians should look like, and the idea that people should simply assimilate, drop their traditions, and "just be happy they are allowed in this country."
That is not the Canada I know, and it is not the Canada I am proud to be a part of.
My roots in this soil run deep and complex. I recognize that I am not Indigenous. My ancestry traces back to some of the first French settlers in Ottawa and Quebec, as well as Acadian lines, alongside a rich blend of English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh heritage. My grandfathers and my father proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces to protect the very liberties we enjoy today.
Being Canadian means having the freedom to choose our own paths. I was in my 30s when I chose the spiritual path I am on now—a choice I made entirely for myself, long before I met my husband. And contrary to the assumptions people love to make about me, choosing to cover my body after marriage was my own decision, made out of deep respect for myself and my relationship.
What Makes Us Strong
Canada is not the US. Our strength has never been a melting pot that forces people to erase who they are. Our pride lies in being a place where people can come, bring their beautiful cultures and traditions, and celebrate the best of themselves within their communities. We are a tapestry where we live alongside one another to teach, learn, and thrive. We are undeniably stronger together.
In Canada, we have the fundamental right to choose and practice our religion freely. As a woman and a mother, I am deeply aware that not all women around the world have the freedom to choose their faith, to own their own business, or to direct their own lives. I do not take those privileges lightly.
Moving Forward Together
Our country is far from perfect. We have a complex history, and we still have a tremendous amount of room to grow, learn, and improve. But I am fiercely proud to have been born in this country, proud to run a business here, and proud to raise my daughter in a land defined by freedom and diversity.
Thank you to everyone who walks through our doors and makes our community the welcoming, vibrant place it is. Keep an eye out for us down by the water today—if you see us, please come say hi!
Wishing you all a safe, happy, and reflective Canada Day! 🍁
