The kitchen is bustling, and the view has never been better. ☕🌿

Whew, it has been a beautiful, busy summer here at the cafe! With the hustle and bustle, our team has been growing, and we have been incredibly lucky to welcome several wonderful new faces to The Hungry Traveler family recently.

One of those amazing new additions is Jerica! While she’s been busy helping us keep up with the rush in the kitchen, she also brought a hidden talent along with her: she is absolutely incredible behind the camera.

Jerica completely captured the magic and beauty of our space in these photos. From the cozy corners of the parlor to the natural light in the atrium, she managed to bottle up exactly what it feels like to step inside during a busy day.

We are so grateful for our hard-working crew—both the familiar faces you know and love, and the new ones making the cafe so special every day. Next time you drop by for your favorite scratch-made treat or coffee, make sure to give a warm welcome to all the new members of our team!

👇 Check out Jerica’s stunning gallery below!

P.S. If you love her eye for detail as much as we do, go give her some love at !

Standing Together Against Hate

This past weekend, many of us saw the video of the incident at our local Costco. While the footage was heartbreaking, there was a vital glimmer of hope: someone stood up for that family. I am incredibly grateful for that person, because the devastating truth is that it doesn’t always happen.

We need to talk about what we don't see on camera. This isn’t a rare, isolated event. It happens hundreds of times a day across Nova Scotia—sometimes as full-out angry rants, but more often as quiet microaggressions and daily slights that wear people down. Most of these moments are never reported. For many immigrants and minorities, historical mistrust of authorities or the feeling that nothing will change means they carry the weight of these experiences silently.

Following up on my Canada Day post about what it truly means to be Canadian, I feel compelled to speak out. As a visible minority who chooses to wear a hijab, I try to show up every day representing the best of what it means to be Muslim. But this hits even closer to home. I am surrounded by immigrants every single day, they are my husband, my friends, and my hardworking employees. They are the ones facing these problems firsthand.

We often hear divisive rhetoric about newcomers, driven largely by one-sided social media echo chambers that manipulate people into fear and anger. But the reality on the ground looks entirely different. Newcomers are working grueling hours, taking on tough, essential roles, and doing exactly what our ancestors did generations ago: working hard to build a better life for their families.

99% of us share the exact same core goals: to raise our families, provide for them, and be active, positive members of our community. This is true regardless of race, religion, background, or sexual orientation.

Because this is happening right here in our towns, we all need to ask ourselves a hard question: What will I do if I witness this happening?

We cannot control the algorithms, but we can control how we show up for each other.

Hate has no place here. Let’s choose to be a community that actively protects, values, and celebrates the hardworking people who call Nova Scotia home.

Happy Canada Day from The Hungry Traveler Cafe! 🇨🇦✨

👋 Quick Note: We are CLOSED today so our incredible team can spend well-deserved time with their families. I can’t wait to head down to the Lunenburg waterfront with my own family today to celebrate one of our absolute favorite holidays! If you see us by the water, please come say hi! 🌊❤️

As we celebrate, I’ve been reflecting a lot on what it truly means to be Canadian.

This past week at the cafe, a conversation arose where someone pushed the narrative that I must be Syrian. I am not. While that interaction stayed with me, it’s part of a larger, disheartening trend I’ve seen online lately—discussions about who "belongs" here, what Canadians should look like, and the idea that people should just assimilate and "be happy they are allowed in this country."

That is not the Canada I know. 🧵👇

Our Roots & Our Choices

My roots here run deep. While I recognize I am not Indigenous, my ancestry traces back to some of the first French settlers in Ottawa and Quebec, Acadian lines, and a blend of English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh heritage. My grandfathers and my father proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces to protect our liberties.

Being Canadian means having the freedom to choose your own path. I was in my 30s when I chose my spiritual path—long before I met my husband. And contrary to the assumptions people love to make, choosing to cover my body after marriage was entirely my own choice, made out of deep respect for myself and my relationship.

Stronger Together

Canada is not a melting pot meant to erase who we are. Our pride lies in being a mosaic—a place where people can bring their cultures and traditions to teach, learn, and thrive alongside one another. We are undeniably stronger together.

As a woman, a business owner, and a mother, I am deeply aware that not all women around the world have the freedom to choose their faith or run their own business. I do not take that for granted.

Our country isn't perfect, and we have a lot of room to grow and learn from our history. But I am fiercely proud to have been born here, proud to run a business here, and proud to raise my daughter in a lan

Happy Canada Day from The Hungry Traveler Cafe! 🇨🇦

Please note: The cafe will be closed today so that our team can take a well-deserved break and spend some quality time with their families. As we gather to celebrate, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on what it truly means to be Canadian...

Roots, Choices, and Identity

This week at the cafe, a conversation arose where someone directly questioned my identity, insisting and pushing the narrative that I must be Syrian. I am not. But the interaction stayed with me, especially given the discussions I’ve seen online lately about who "belongs" here, what Canadians should look like, and the idea that people should simply assimilate, drop their traditions, and "just be happy they are allowed in this country."

That is not the Canada I know, and it is not the Canada I am proud to be a part of.

My roots in this soil run deep and complex. I recognize that I am not Indigenous. My ancestry traces back to some of the first French settlers in Ottawa and Quebec, as well as Acadian lines, alongside a rich blend of English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh heritage. My grandfathers and my father proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces to protect the very liberties we enjoy today.

Being Canadian means having the freedom to choose our own paths. I was in my 30s when I chose the spiritual path I am on now—a choice I made entirely for myself, long before I met my husband. And contrary to the assumptions people love to make about me, choosing to cover my body after marriage was my own decision, made out of deep respect for myself and my relationship.

What Makes Us Strong

Canada is not the US. Our strength has never been a melting pot that forces people to erase who they are. Our pride lies in being a place where people can come, bring their beautiful cultures and traditions, and celebrate the best of themselves within their communities. We are a tapestry where we live alongside one another to teach, learn, and thrive. We are undeniably stronger together.

In Canada, we have the fundamental right to choose and practice our religion freely. As a woman and a mother, I am deeply aware that not all women around the world have the freedom to choose their faith, to own their own business, or to direct their own lives. I do not take those privileges lightly.

Moving Forward Together

Our country is far from perfect. We have a complex history, and we still have a tremendous amount of room to grow, learn, and improve. But I am fiercely proud to have been born in this country, proud to run a business here, and proud to raise my daughter in a land defined by freedom and diversity.

Thank you to everyone who walks through our doors and makes our community the welcoming, vibrant place it is. Keep an eye out for us down by the water today—if you see us, please come say hi!

Wishing you all a safe, happy, and reflective Canada Day! 🍁

🍁 Canada Day Holiday Update 🍁

We will be closed on Wednesday, July 1st so our team can get some well-earned rest and spend quality time with their families.

To be totally transparent, we’ve been running a bit short-staffed lately, and you lovely people have been keeping us so incredibly busy! We are profoundly grateful for the amazing support, but it means our crew has been working double-time. A day to completely unplug and recharge is exactly what everyone needs.

We’ll be back open and refreshed for regular hours on Thursday, July 2nd.
