Mixing seed!

About half our cover crop acres we have been making our own mix. Lots of tweaking but I think we've settled on one that gives us the most flexibility as far as use. We may graze it in summer, bale it for winter feed, or both. It also allows us to use some of our own seed.

Mix includes: Oats, Forage Peas, Fall rye, Hairy Vetch, Buckwheat

With the fall rye & hairy vetch mixed in, we hope for strong regrowth after the first harvest that allows for fall grazing and/or early spring grazing the following year.

But most importantly the cows love it! 🤠🐮

Seeding is in full swing in our neck of the woods!

We are just getting started, had some nice rain recently but wouldn't say no to a little more.

We clean a fair bit of our own seed at the Green Beach. Here's a look at some of the contraptions and setups we've Come up with for cleaning flax, oats & peas. Definitely not fancy but it works!

One more taste of winter this weekend!

We were able to get the bulls out of the yard, which opened up the first paddock for the laying hens. But they sure weren't keen on coming out yesterday morning!

Hoping the next precipitation we get is rain... 🤞🤠🐔

Spring is in full swing at the Green Beach!

As of yesterday, we have all of our new chicks: 900 meat birds and 100 new layers.

The meat birds spend 4 weeks in the barn and then go out to pasture. The new layers will be a little longer in the barn, but will have their own outdoor chicken run to roam until they start laying this fall.

HR is loving the new chicks. Something tells me we won't have to worry about remembering to check on them this week..🤠🐥

Next up: new pigs! 🐷

Yearling heifers ars settling into some new pasture!

First time grazing this quarter. Long time grain acres that have been a little wet recently so it has been sowed down to a perennial mix. Looking forward to changes in the soil here!

Heifers will chew away down here until breeding season. 🤠🐮

We are a day late, Happy Earth Day from the Green Beach!

As we move into spring, we look forward to another busy growing season of pasture moves, planting in the field & the garden and meat deliveries.

Wonder what new plants or wildlife we might find this year! 🤠

Spring must be getting close!

Enough snow gone we could move the pigs to a new spot. They are already digging around and finding treats to eat.

The sun sure feels nice today after a brief April cool down.

Happy Saturday from the Green Beach! 🤠🐷

We've been getting a healthy dose of winter weather the last week!

All of the animals have access to a patch of bush to keep out of the wind, and lots of feed to see them through the cold temps.

The wildlife are out in full force - we have seen several moose on the farm over the last couple of weeks. And the deer have reappeared and have made themselves comfortable at our bale grazing site.

Fingers are crossed for some warmer weather - for us and the animals! 🤞

It must be the holidays - I was able to recruit lots of help for chores this morning! Harvie was out inspecting all the animals.

The new heifers we bought have graduated electric fence training in the yard and have joined the rest of our heifers on the bale graze.

The main herd is well settled into bales now as well. And the bulls have a nice spot out of the wind in the bush.

Everyone looked happy this morning. Will check again after Christmas! 🤠🎅

The main herd have been 'working cows' the last few days!

We got a good dump of snow and now it has cooled off with a howling wind. The cows are still digging away on stockpiled grass primarily. They are getting a bale unrolled this morning to help them through the wind chill.

Hope everyone is staying safe for the winter weather!
