Thank you to all this weekend, and to those that might visit one day.
Yes we are open today, and every day until Halloween.
I am forever in awe of people who pay attention. People who wait for you while you tie your shoes while the others have walked away. People who continue listening intently while the rest of the group stopped listening. Noticing your moments of silence when everyone else hasn’t. The friends who say “this made me think of you” noticing things you never even noticed about yourself. People who say “text me when you get home safely.” People who make you laugh until you cry. Childhood friends who keep in touch. People with genuine intentions. People who are soft when the world has given them every opportunity and reason to turn hard. The “let’s get ice cream” at 3am friend. The turn up the music in the car and sing friend. People whose actions match their words. People who make the world feel less chaotic. Kindred spirits. The trustworthy and honest. The hard workers. The good listeners. The clear communicators. The people who love you for who you are. The people who don’t ask you to be anything other than yourself. The people who choose you. The people who stay.
In our day to day life here at our shops, we have held up those that have just lost a loved one. Those that have lost a beloved pet. We have shared their last cone, with both. We have had people that didn’t come back, and we’ve had to find them because it worried us; only to find that they had lost their lives. We have been blessed with beautiful staff that have become our family, even the ones that didn’t work out. They have all impacted us deeply. You don’t build a business and not connect. We have seen the best of people, and sometimes the very worst of people. We still wish those people, grace, and well being. This weekend we will be busy. We will wonder where the people have went with their cars packed with coolers, family, with friends. We wish them the best weekend ever, and most importantly, a safe one. We thank them all for making us part of their memories, but know, we care that you are here. We care that you return another day, so that we can catch up. When that cone passes from our hand to yours…we have no idea what’s happening in your life, but we do hand you joy, just a little bit of joy. Special moments have been shared here. Nothing touched our hearts more than the young man that pulled his moving van over and said “Hi Mama!! I’m not getting ice cream today, but I couldn’t go to Nova Scotia without letting you know!!!” Or the young girl that had never spoken, not once to me, but stopped and spoke this one time. She said “thank you for being so kind, we are moving to St. Kitts in the Caribbean and I will miss you.” She took her last cone and I was so touched, I cried on the spot. I connected to an almost nonverbal young lady, and made a friend.
Or all the many spouses that have made the trip to honour their late husband or wife, watch them get their flavour and…tearfully we share their cone, and a hug.
We have always said, it costs nothing to be kind, but it made us rich with memories. We hope we are part of some of their memories too.
