The past couple months of Fall have been absolutely stunning here on the West Coast 🌅

We’re just a few days away from officially entering our Storm Season and while the sky may grow a little darker throughout the next while, the drama of the waves and weather has us beyond excited. Not to mention that a storm brewing outside is a perfect reason to indulge in some much needed rest and relaxation.

If there was an award for the most underrated place to sit at the Inn, we'd give it to the lobby of the Pointe Building.

It's a bit more of a hub of activity than the Beach Building lobby, or our Lookout Library but that adds to the charm! The chairs are comfortable, the South-facing views are hypnotizing and vast, and the fireplace can be turned on or off upon request.

Oh, and our favourite part? You're right by our wonderful Guest Services team, all of whom are happy to engage in interesting conversations during slower moments.

We recommend starting it off with a cozy, relaxation-filled morning in your room, followed by donning our iconic orange Helly Hansen rain jackets to explore Chesterman Beach, and finishing the day with an elevated dinner paired with stormy Coastal views at The Pointe Restaurant.

Another defining part of Tofino’s surf culture is Queen of the Peak - Womens Surf Championships , an annual championship created to celebrate and showcase women’s surfing.

Started in 2010 by Surf Sister Surf School and Shelter Restaurant, the event was born in the wake of the massively supported men's O’Neill Cold Water Classic coming to Tofino the year before. With one of the highest proportions of women surfers in the world, Tofino seemed like the perfect place to create a competition of its own - especially after the town had proved it would absolutely show up to support local surf talent.

Since then, the event has seen hundreds of top female surfers travel from all over the world to compete in Tofino's waters. Among the competition, we are also always lucky to see incredibly talented local surfers such as Mathea and Sanoa Dempfle-Olin take to the waves.

While the championship is taking a purposeful pause following the 2025 competition, we look forward to seeing Queen of the Peak return in the future and celebrating more incredible women's surfing. The Wickaninnish Inn has been a longtime supporter and sponsor of the event, and we’re proud to see it continue to be part of Tofino’s surf story.

Nothing quite embodies the importance of surf culture and community spirit in Tofino like the town's response to O'Neill's 2009 Coldwater Classic.

The date was October 31st, 2009, the final day of the competition. The conditions were particularly rough but even above the pounding surf and howling wind, it was impossible to drown out the cheers of thousands of locals crowded along Chesterman Beach.

It's not hard to imagine why the streets of Tofino were empty and nearly every business shuttered when Tofino local, Pete Devries, was competing for the win.

And after entering the Classic as a Canadian wildcard, Pete ended up the champion. Not only did he win Canada's first professional international surf competition but he did it on the very beach he grew up on, surrounded by an immense outpouring of support from his hometown.

Truly a monumental day for a local legend and for a town as deeply connected to surf as Tofino.
