David Berkowitz, often referred to as the "Son of Sam," is a notorious figure in the annals of American crime. He was born Richard David Falco on June 1, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. As a serial killer who terrorized New York City from July 1976 until his arrest in August 1977, Berkowitz was convicted for a series of shooting attacks that began in the summer of 1976.
Throughout his crime spree, Berkowitz eluded a massive police manhunt while leaving brazen letters that mocked the police and promised further crimes. This audacious behavior, coupled with the media's portrayal of the killings, sparked widespread fear throughout New York City at the time of his attacks.
His signature was to kill women with long, dark hair, and he usually targeted young couples in cars. He was eventually caught and confessed to the shootings, later claiming that he was obeying the orders of a demon manifested in the form of a dog, "Harvey," who belonged to his neighbor "Sam."
Berkowitz was found mentally competent to stand trial. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 25-years-to-life in prison for each of the six "Son of Sam" killings.
David Berkowitz's story has been widely narrated in popular media, including films, TV shows, and books, due to its unnerving combination of cold-blooded killings and bizarre explanations, which gripped the public imagination. As of my knowledge cut-off in September 2021, Berkowitz remains incarcerated and has repeatedly expressed his remorse in interviews and public statements.
