If you think Hakka food is only chili chicken and Manchurian chicken you are missing out 😭

TRY THIS! Hakka stuffed tofu with pork and shrimp!
IMO: served best over a hot piping bowl of plain steamed rice 🍚

❤️ Thank you to for inviting us to speak at the Toronto Public Library!

I’ve looked up to Ann since her Chop Suey Nation came out. As someone who grew up loving journalism, being in conversation with someone I admired for so long felt really special. Not going to lie… Was nervous! 😬

But more than her accomplishments (of which she has MANY), what stands out most is who she is — funny, kind, tremendously generous with her time, and deeply supportive of others.

Really grateful to know you Ann! ❤️ this was a true full circle moment.

Thank you for having us be part of your panel. It was such an inspiring and great group to sit with !

Social media, storytelling and a digital presence was not part of the original plan to keep our restaurant thriving. But it ended up being our biggest lifeline to keep us alive.

We began sharing our journey a year ago… and we have pivoted a lot. Made a lot of mistakes. And kept going. Next year we will celebrate our 40th year in business!

We will be sharing more of our journey online and in person.
Tonight we will be

Grateful to chat and swap & listen to stories this AHM 💛🙏🏻

Thank you for having us!

Around this time last year was the worst year in our restaurant’s entire history. Four decades we survived and 2025 really kicked us down. Happy to report we really went down swinging and the city and our community really came through for us . We’ll share more later about this journey to survive… but until then Happy Asian Heritage Month… we’ve got a restaurant to open.

Lunch starts at 11:30am. SEE YOU 💛

SUPPORT LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES

Something I’ve been hearing a lot recently is : put your money where your mouth is.

If you care about our city support all the small local businesses that contribute to the cultural fabric of it. It doesn’t have to be just Chinatown … it can be little Italy, little Jamaica, Kensington market, J-town, Korea-town, little Portugal and beyond.
It also doesn’t have to be a lot. Just spread the word, purchase a bottle of water, tell them you appreciate them. Little acts of support go a long way.

For those asking about how to support Chinatown: visit all the chinatowns across the GTA. Support the aunties and uncles serving you. At Yueh Tung we really appreciate the work is doing. Consider visiting their site and donating.
Also support local small businesses and artists that care about the community .anson
Visit delicious restaurants and so many more all doing great things to keep our culture alive.

If you love a Chinatown shop please drop their name below 👇

Growing up, my dad used to tell me stories about the lineups outside the restaurant. People snaking down the stairs. Around the corner. Always waiting to eat.

I could always picture it.

That image has stayed with me over the years and is the one guiding Joanna, myself and our team to continue fighting for our little strip of Chinatown on Elizabeth Street.

Deep down, I have always believed it could happen again.

But more than that, I want my parents to come back to the restaurant not as workers carrying the weight of survival — but as guests. And to see the restaurant thriving again ❤️ And because of our supportive city , we are happy to report it looks like it is going to happen. Thank you all so much!

We’ve received so many messages asking how to support small businesses.

My answer? Support local — not just ours, but the places in your neighbourhood that carry stories, history, and heart.

And if you care about the future of Chinatown, please consider supporting the . They are doing important work to help preserve this community.

✨ There was a time when I thought stories only mattered if they were written in newspapers.

Now somehow, the story I’m telling — alongside my sister — is our family’s.

Recently, I had the chance to speak with and about our family restaurant, the sacrifices of our parents and community, and what it means to fight for a place that almost disappeared.

Growing up at Yueh Tung, I never imagined our little corner of Chinatown would become part of a bigger conversation.

But what I’ve learned is this:

The stories that may seem insignificant to others — the ones belonging to small immigrant family businesses like ours — have always mattered.

We just needed someone willing to tell them.

Because this story is bigger than just Chinatown.

It’s Little Jamaica. Little Italy. Koreatown. Greektown. Kensington. The family-run places, community spaces, and small businesses built through sacrifice that helped shape Toronto into the city it is today.

We see you.

And for anyone who has ever wondered whether preserving something old still matters in a world moving so fast — it does.

For our parents. For Chinatown. For the next generation.

Thank you to for listening to and sharing our story ❤️

Happy Asian Heritage Month!

At Yueh Tung, Mother’s Day always feels personal.

To our mom — thank you for the sacrifices we didn’t fully understand until we became parents ourselves. For the long hours, the quiet strength, and the love you poured into every plate. We’re sorry we guilted you every Mother’s Day for working at the restaurant and always having to celebrate the weekend after 😭 we get it now!

And to all the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, chosen moms, and mother figures in our community — thank you for holding families together in ways big and small.

Happy (early) Mother’s Day 💐! Tomorrow we won’t get a chance to use our phones during service.

Bring mom by this weekend — we’d love to celebrate her with you.

📍Canada’s oldest Hakka Chinese restaurant, still family run after nearly 40 years.

Also just one more thing :
Many of the women serving you, cooking for you, and taking care of you at Yueh Tung this weekend are mothers too.
We will all be working so other families can celebrate together.

So if service takes a little longer, or someone seems a little tired — we hope you’ll lead with kindness 🫶🏻 we are so grateful to be celebrating and serving your family on the big day! We love creating memories with you all.
