NishDish is proud to be part of regrowing our local and Indigenous Pawpaws trees! You may remember last fall we scoured the city to find PawPaw fruits, for a source of seed, and finally found them at Warner's Farm booth at a farmers market! Many of those seeds are now germinating after spending a cold winter in moist soil as part of the cold stratification process (which mimics wintery outdoor conditions). Have a look at the baby trees in these pics and spread the word!
The PawPaws beautiful succulent and sweet Indigenous fruits with their soft caramely insides are hard to find as the once plentiful trees are now scarce. The paw paw revitalization project will be ongoing for many years as the seeds are so slow to germinate and seedlings need special care for the first few years.
So while we still greatly miss our storefront at 690 Bloor St West, the community projects that sprouted from NishDish are still going strong. Among these many community projects many of you have heard about is to learn how to grow and bring back these most special pawpaw trees that are so valuable for our local ecology and Indigenous Agroecology....And stay tuned for more exciting NishDish news to be revealed later this month!!!
