Where are the real coffee leaders? 🤷‍♀️

Given the recent findings of the 2026 Coffee Barometer Report, it would seem that without being forced by strict government intervention and regulation, the world’s largest coffee companies will continue the wildly unsustainable “business as usual” approach.

Since its launch in 2006, a group of organizations, including Solidaridad and Conservation International, have been tracking sustainability, economics, and trade in the coffee sector. They use this data to publish a new Coffee Barometer Report every 2-3 years. This 2026 report marks 20 years of monitoring the industry.

The results are frustrating - yet unsurprising.

The price we pay and the companies we buy our coffee from matter. Stay informed, and support local, independent retailers that stand for change.

To close out Earth Month, She Grows Coffee is highlighting Julia Ortega, a coffee farmer in Puebla, Mexico.

At Finca Los Pinos, Julia grows coffee under a diverse canopy of native plants—an approach that helps regulate temperature, prevent erosion, and support biodiversity … She also has reserved forest areas alongside her coffee production!

Her focus is soil health: organic matter feeds microorganisms and a balanced ecosystem reduces the need for synthetic inputs … She even reduces fuel use with a bicycle-powered de-pulping machine!

Her work has earned Mexico’s first carbon-neutral certifications in coffee production 👏

And these growing conditions don’t just benefit the environment, they also influence coffee quality. Healthier soils support stronger plant nutrition and shade canopy can lead to slower cherry development—conditions associated with higher bean density and more complex cup profiles.

Through her educational tours, Julia shares her passion and offers insights into the ecological relationships that make sustainable coffee possible. Located just a little over an hour or so outside of Mexico City, is a coffee farm worth paying attention and a visit to! 🌱☕️

Happy first official 💚

Today we celebrate, on what would have been her 92nd birthday. One thing to know about Jane is that she had a wonderful sense of humour, and I feel she would appreciate this small tribute to her “camp coffee” method. Jane loved her morning cup of coffee, and when making it out in the field while studying chimpanzees in Africa, she was forced to be resourceful. I imagine that her cups tasted incredible in the morning sunlight while perched on her Gombe forest lookout.

Swipe right to watch the video of Jane making her camp coffee. This, for a group of press at a Green Mountain Coffee Roasters event, long before they were bought by Keurig Dr Pepper.

I will forever remember Jane’s fun, witty enthusiasm and grounded way of seeing the world that captivated the world.

Happy Birthday, Jane. We miss you and promise to continue your good work on this planet 💚
