Credit cards are more expensive payment methods for merchants than other forms of payment such as debit cards and cash. But the higher fee rates associated with premium credit cards hurt Canadian small businesses - credit card companies charge merchants even higher fees when customers use premium credit cards than when they use 'regular' ones.

Small businesses pay 1.75% to 2.75% out to credit card companies for EVERY transaction (some higher and some lower then the average).

For example, a merchant that does $20,000 in credit card transactions a month and pay 2% out to the credit card company will pay $400 in fees. Plus the terminal charges, plus the internet fees. That’s over $5500 a year in lost revenue.

When you visit a small business, and we truly appreciate you, consider using debit or cash.
