The Yarmouth Shark Scramble began 22 years ago when Bob Gavel approached John Boudreau with an idea to have a shark derby. This gave them an advantage as to how they would like to run their derby. Bob and John are proud to be recognized as having one of the most successful and professional derbies in the Eastern Canada. Sponsorship had a lot to do with that. The buisnesses in Yarmouth step up to t
he plate year after year. Yarmouth Shark Scramble is a fishing tournament where teams compete to catch the largest BLUE shark. The event is used as an avenue for Department of Fisheries and Oceans Science Research Department and proceeds from the tournament goes to local charities. The Canadian record Mako Shark was caught at the Yarmouth Shark Scramble being 11'4" and weighing at 1084 lbs. Yarmouth Shark Scramble is in its 23rd season as of 2021. Each year the tournament has an average of 20 vessels and 150-200 participants. The types of sharks currently being fished in the tournament are Blue Sharks only, these sharks are not commercially fished so this gives the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Science the opportunity to monitor the condition of the sharks and population, hundreds of Sharks are tagged and released each year by the participants. The weigh-in event is hosted on the Yarmouth waterfront behind Rudders Restaurant and Brew Pub at 96 Water Street, Yarmouth, NS.
