Bacalhau is codfish and the star of many local dishes here in Portugal.

The Portuguese love this northern fish so much that today it is part of their national identity. They even have a saying that states that there are at least 365 ways to prepare bacalhau in Portugal — one for each day of the year.

The story goes that the dish was invented in a tasca in Bairro Alto owned by a man named Braz (modernity saw the spelling change to Brás), probably a member of the large community who had emigrated to Lisbon from Spanish Galicia in the late 19th century. In a waste-not-want-not eureka moment that would make any nose-to-tail chef proud, Braz used up what were seen as the less noble parts of the fish, scraping everything from the bones then shredding it all and mixing it with eggs and potatoes. He created something quite delicious. The date of his moment of genius cannot be accurately pinpointed

Our Amazing Octopus Picadinho !

“Picadinho”, or just “Picado”, is a traditional dish in Madeira and is made in pretty much every restaurant on the island.

As such, it has many different forms and iterations. Some are made with beef cuts (others with octopus or squid) seasoned with pepper and garlic and roasted into a sauce and served with fries (though the sides vary).

The meal is meant to be enjoyed with a group of friends using toothpicks or forks.

Our already Famous Octopus Salad !

Octopus salad is wonderful and you will get the amazing flavor of the Atlantic. Portugal has more than 900 km of coastline and a fishing area more than 50x bigger than inland. You might hear about the Portuguese Octopus Salad which is cooked on a pressure cook or boiled in a pan, depends on the chef or person that cooks it.

Some people tell about the cooking process, others that it has a secret or they beat the octopus before cooking. Independent of the way they cook or the process, Octopus salad is delicious. It is commonly served as a starter in a good marisqueira (Portuguese specialized restaurant in seafood) or in a Cervejaria ( Beer House ).

The consistency of the octopus salad usually is very tender in which you get three to four chunks at a time blended with peppers, onions, and garlic, as well as parsley or coriander. You will find it marinade flavored with Portuguese Olive Oil, in which the country is one of the main producers of this product worldwide. By default is extra virgin oil, the premium quality of this ingredient.
