It is with great sadness and regret that after much consideration and heart searching, we have had to make the decision to not reopen the Perroquet Vert and to wind up the association.

Due to the restrictions on our activities associated with the Corona virus crisis, it is not just a question of social distancing – being a café, we would need to disinfect tables, and everything on them, chairs, the toilet, etc between every customer. Furthermore, any items (eg books, coathangers, items in the brocante room and other boutiques) should be disinfected after being touched, and we would therefore need to always have at least two volunteers on duty to do this, and to ensure customers are following the rules, separate money from food serving, and so on. Most of our clubs and classes cannot or do not want to continue, and the income from these is an important source of revenue to the PV. But most importantly, many of our volunteers or their partners do fall into the vulnerable category and have indicated that they cannot work, which is entirely understandable, and our priority will always be the safety of our volunteers as well as our customers. Unfortunately, despite frequent requests in the past, it is always very hard to find enough volunteers at the best of times, so in view of the requirements outlined above, the best we could have done is to open 3 days a week– as we have been struggling for some time to cover our overheads as it is (hence the need for fund raisers, spring and Christmas fairs, etc) it is simply not financially viable for us to continue under these restrictions.

We are also very conscious that the other cafés in Chalais rely on their custom for their livelihoods and it seems socially irresponsible that if we remained opened, the Perroquet Vert, as a non-profit making organisation, would be taking business from them at this difficult time and we hope you will all give them your support.

In addition to these factors, key members of the management team will be moving on in the near future, and in addition the landlord has dropped the sale price of the building dramatically in order to try and achieve a quick sale, so the future would have been in question in any event.

We are very well aware of the loss to the community the closure of the PV will bring and it is of great regret to all of us that have worked so hard to make it such a success, but sadly all good things must come to an end and it appears that this is that moment for the PV.
We are in the process of trying to contact all sellers with items for sale (or where return has been requested in the case of the former) in the Deuxieme Vie and artisans’ boutiques, and those with money owed to them for previous sales, but would ask all those with items for sale in the brocante room who wish to have them back to email [email protected] before 20 July to make an appointment to collect them. All items not claimed by then, and all other assets of the association (furniture, books, café equipment, etc and any cash left in the bank) will be donated to local charities but if there is anything in particular that you would be interested in purchasing (with all proceeds going to charity), please email Georgia before 15 July.
Can we take this opportunity to reiterate our extreme sadness at having had to make this decision but also to thank you all for your incredible support of the Perroquet Vert over the past 7 years. On behalf of all the team, it has been a pleasure serving you and we wish you all good health and happiness for the future.

With warmest regards from all at the Perroquet Vert

The management of the Perroquet Vert are currently reviewing the feasibility and financial viability of opening on a restricted basis, to respect the social distancing and other requirements associated with the Corona virus. We have to bear in mind that many of our customers and volunteers fall into the ‘vulnerable’ categories and our priority is to do our utmost to avoid exposing them to any risk, particularly during the tourist season. If, in the sad event re-opening is not possible, arrangements will be made for sellers to collect their items and any monies owing to them.

Sellers of clothes in the Deuxieme Vie boutique who previously indicated they wished to collect their unsold clothes at the end of the winter season will be contacted in the next week or so to make the necessary arrangements.
Updates on the situation and the decision made will be made in the next few weeks and advised here, but in the meantime, if you have questions, please contact us on this email address. [email protected]

We thank our customers and sellers for their understanding and support during this difficult period and above all, hope you all stay safe and well.

Can you sew?
There is a severe shortage of face masks in France. Hospitals and other frontline workers are appealing for people who sew to make them and send them in. There is a tutorial on this site. They are very simple. Should be made in 3 ply from cotton material.
Please help if you can.

L’hôpital Yves-Le Foll de Saint-Brieuc (Côtes-d’Armor) a lancé un appel sur Facebook, mardi 17 mars, pour inviter les Costarmoricains à fabriquer des masques pour le personnel non-soignant.

After much consideration, in view of the rapidly developing situation relating to Corona virus, we have decided to close the Perroquet Vert until the current crisis is over. We have taken this very difficult decision to protect our customers and volunteers from additional risk of infection, and also in fairness to the other cafés in the town which rely more than we, as an assocation, do on your custom for their livelihoods.

We hope you understand the need for this temporary closure and look forward to welcoming you all back when we are able to reopen. In the meantime, we hope you all remain safe and healthy over the coming weeks.

With best wishes from all at the Perroquet Vert.
