An intellectual friendship

At the Collège des Presles, Ramus did more than teach grammar, rhetoric, and logic. He also introduced mathematics, a discipline then considered unworthy of university study because it was mainly associated with merchants and artillerymen.
Ramus shared the teaching duties with his friend, Omer Talon, who taught philosophy. For the first time, the authority of the poets and orators of Antiquity was no longer treated as unquestionable. For the first time in centuries, the two friends challenged the established doctrines of the university and opened the door to a new way of thinking.

Marie Van Eijk : Graphiste et directrice artistique freelance spécialisée en création d’identité de marque, Marie est sensible aux lieux qui racontent une histoire et stimulent la créativité.

THE COLLEGE
A laboratory of ideas

Ramus openly challenged the traditional teaching based on Aristotle, whose logic he considered too rigid.
His writings caused a scandal, yet his arguments were so brilliant that the king appointed him principal of the Collège des Presles.
There, Ramus taught mathematics and rhetoric, emphasizing understanding, clarity, and reasoning over rote repetition.
The college became a leading center of the Parisian Humanism and played a key role in shaping the minds of the French Renaissance movement.

PIERRE DE LA RAMEE
A free spirit at the Collège des Presles

In the 16th century, the Collège des Presles became the stage for a major intellectual transformation. At the heart of this renewal was its principal, Pierre de La Ramée, known as Ramus, a humanist and professor at the University of Paris.
Born around 1515 into a modest family, Ramus rose through the ranks of the University. He became Master of Arts and later a professor, embodying a rare example of social mobility within the academic world of the time.

: Chercheuse en chimie atmosphérique, Rimal consacre ses travaux à mieux comprendre la pollution de l’air et ses impacts, notamment liés à l’agriculture.
De Tripoli à Paris, puis aujourd’hui au Cyprus Institute, son parcours est guidé par une même ambition : faire avancer la recherche pour mieux agir face aux enjeux environnementaux.
