Statement by The Aonach Mhacha Board of Directors regarding Caife Mhacha

Starts:

Aonach Mhacha is a charity that promotes the Irish language from its centre in Armagh city. Our building is a community-run hub from which other charities have been mounting their operations, but has also hosted café and shop premises on the ground floor. Recently the commercial tenant running the café and shop unilaterally decided to give notice, being dissatisfied with the outcome of the annual rent review required by the lease. The previous arrangements, which left Aonach Mhacha liable for rates and utilities, turned out to have the effect of a charity subsidising a business. This could not continue any longer.

It is the intention now of the Board and staff of Aonach Mhacha to ensure a successful café and shop is up and running in the near future on terms that generate income, create employment and allow Aonach Mhacha to advance its charitable purposes. We thank our mainstay tenants who continue to make Aonach Mhacha a vibrant cultural centre.

We wish our departing tenant all the best for the future and thank the staff of Caife Mhacha for their contribution to Aonach Mhacha.

We are now open to proposals from potential tenants to run the café and/or shop as a commercial or social enterprise in ways that are compatible with Aonach Mhacha’s core aim of promoting the Irish language and its rich heritage in Armagh.
