Higgler: 'A travelling purveyor of fanciful items and unnecessary trifles'. We possibly have the best job in the world; eating and drinking as much as we can that has been produced anywhere between Lands End, Wiltshire and Gloucester. Then, if we like it, we offer it to you! We have a strange but very important request. Please do not encourage the blackbird.

We have this lovely female blackbird that's become very familiar with the shop to the point it's now entering the shop and being quite daring.

Well into the shop and showing little fear of humans.

We are assuming this change in normal behaviour is due to pressure from the very hot weather and demand on resources.
It's Desperate rather than tame, and therefore it's very important to ignore it as a customer.

Acclimatising to humans is bad for her in the long run.

A natural wary attitude will keep this bird alive. Although she will scavenge crumbs and bugs from our frontage and planters it's important we as both staff and customers don't encourage her into the shop, although it may seem harmless and fun it will ultimately end badly for this young lady.

As a business and as a crew of animal lovers we have supplied water and a range of nutrition in the surrounding area that should get her through the heat whilst encouraging her to forage and depend less on us.

We've put water and food in the surrounding area in places less likely to attract bigger and more territorial birds away from the shop and more encouraging to her natural behaviour.

If she does come in the shop please alert a member of staff. We will look after her and we will make sure she has what she needs.

Please help us look after our fabulous local wildlife.

Something a little different for our Thursday special today. This is our home cured salmon gravlax. That gorgeous colour comes from a beetroot, lemon and dill cure. This is one of my all time favourite things to make and although not tricky it takes a lot of time and patience. It also requires some very specific salmon.

Whilst we typically always try to use local ingredients with home cures your salmon source is crucial as most wild caught or farmed salmon shouldn't be used. This one the other hand is a VAR salmon raised in the Faroe isles and is the closest ethical alternative to wild salmon but is raised in clean fast flowing environment is important because unlike cooking curing requires a very high "sushi grade" fish. This promotes safety, reduces the fatty nature and produces an incredible texture.

We are delighted to announce that we have won Gold for the 5th year in a row. With last year winning gold and being shortlisted for Champion in the Cafe category this firmly cements us as one of the best coffee shops in the south west and an independent punching well above its weight class.

The mystery judges feedback highlights superb coffee, menu choice, cosy atmosphere and friendly service. They also noted our lovely customers!!

I'm hugely appreciative of my crew for this as it's them to are the face of higgler. Beth is very relieved after discovering it was her that served them and had been messaging me most days to see if there's been an update 😅.

Harry is the chap you may spot in the photo frame on our wall and is our greatest consumer of coffee by FL Oz, he's currently rapidly approaching his 2000th flat white (from when we started recording).
