Over the past year, our small family-run restaurant has been repeatedly targeted because our business has partial Israeli ownership. We have always been open about who we are: a Maltese partner and a half Israeli partner who was born here in Bangor. This is our home. We live here, we work here, we raise our daughter here, and we have always contributed to the high street and the community. We never expected that part of our identity would lead to ongoing various forms of harassment.
Since the beginning of this year, our restaurant — which is our workplace, our livelihood, and, for much of the day, our child’s second home — has been vandalised, targeted with boycott stickers, and subjected to false accusations by a local student “activist” group. At first, we tried to quietly remove the stickers and carry on. But the situation escalated in ways that have had a deep and lasting impact on our mental health and sense of safety.
On several occasions, one of these individuals entered the restaurant to shout at us in front of customers and in front of our 5-year-old daughter, leaving her afraid and distressed. These incidents were frightening — not only for us as parents, but also for our wonderful staff, many of whom have been with us for years and who care and feel protective over us, and over our daughter especially.
We reported each incident to the police who did all they could to help, the individual was arrested, but no further action was taken by CPS. Despite following the correct legal channels, the harassment has continued, becoming increasingly apparent that these individuals are targeting one of the few Jewish owned business in the area. More recently, our windows were vandalised with stickers falsely claiming that we “Fund genocide.” This is not only untrue — it is deeply distressing and harmful.
To be clear:
We do not fund or have any involvement with any military organisation.
Our business pays wages to local staff, supports local suppliers, pays UK taxes, and supports our family. That is the simple reality.
This situation is not about differing political views. It is targeted harassment that has caused real emotional harm and given the huge increase in antisemitism in the UK right now has left us feeling unsafe in our own workplace and, at times, worried about having our daughter present. The stress of this has affected our staff’s wellbeing, our family life, and our ability to feel secure in the town we call home.
We have reported every incident to the police and will continue to do so. We are sharing only what we can at this time due to ongoing cases. The images and videos you see here are just a small amount of the evidence we have and we have chosen to blur faces out of respect.
We care deeply about Bangor. We are proud to be part of this community. The support and kindness so many of you have shown — to us, to our staff, and to our family — has meant more than we can express. It has helped us continue during an extremely distressing time.
No business should be targeted like this.
Thank you to those who continue to support us. Your support truly matters.
