Captain Cook’ is our most popular dark roast, and this month’s best-seller - but do you know the story behind this SD Bell classic?

Back in the 1960’s WW2 rationing, and the restrictions on purchasing coffee from former Empire colonies, had ended. My father started experimenting with other origins, including Hawaii, which was a new up-and-coming region, attractively priced to find new markets.

Keen to give this newfound darkly roasted coffee a brand name, and tying in his familial links with the North East of England, he hit on “Captain Cook”, who came from Middlesbrough, and famously ‘discovered’ Hawaii.

In the last few decades, unfortunately, Hawaiian Kona coffee has since found its rightful place at the extremely expensive end of the market, so, keen to retain the name, but at an affordable price, Captain Cook as a popular, nutty, heavily caramelised roast, migrated from Hawaii to its nearest taste-neighbour, Brazil!
