Product spotlight: Shibui Earl Grey

All of the tea we serve at The Village Café comes from Shibui Tea, based nearby in Loanhead.

Their Earl Grey is one of the classics on our shelf. It’s made with Ceylon and Assam black teas, flavoured with bergamot - the citrus ingredient that gives Earl Grey its recognisable scent and taste.

Bergamot is often described as somewhere between orange, lemon and floral bitterness, which is why Earl Grey feels lighter and more fragrant than a standard breakfast tea, even though it’s still a black tea.

We serve Shibui tea in the café, and we also keep a selection available to buy from the shelf.

School holidays are approaching.

This is not a drill.

The Village Cafe is open for pre-holiday training: coffee, cake, lunch and takeaway drinks available for anyone preparing for several weeks of snack requests, lost shoes and “what are we doing today?”

So there’s plenty of time to get the important pre-match prep sorted early: coffee, cake, pizza, and maybe something to keep you awake past your usual bedtime.

A little product spotlight this week: Azzurro Monte Carlo coffee.

This is the coffee we serve here at The Village Cafe. It’s an Italian espresso blend with an equal balance of Arabica and Robusta beans, giving it that proper café coffee character: rich crema, a smooth finish and enough body to hold up beautifully in lattes, cappuccinos and flat whites.

Azzurro was founded in Turin, and its coffee is still hand-roasted in Italy. It’s a classic, dependable coffee with a bit of depth to it, which is exactly why it works so well as our everyday house coffee.

We also stock bags of Azzurro Monte Carlo in the cafe, for anyone who wants to take the same coffee home.

A little ingredient spotlight this week: Mungoswells Strong White Flour.

Mungoswells Malt & Milling is a family-run farm and mill in East Lothian, where the grain is grown, milled and packed on site. It’s proper strong white flour, with enough structure for doughs that need a bit of stretch and chew, but it also has more character than standard supermarket flour.

We use it for our pizza bases here at The Village Cafe, and we stock bags of Mungoswells flour too for anyone who enjoys baking at home.

Friday pizzas will be on the specials board tomorrow.

So on our seafood theme this week, we have five specials...

For the classic option, we’ve got Haddock, Fish & Chips, Scampi & Chips or Haddock Goujon Burger.

For something lighter, try our Teriyaki Salmon with Rice & Avocado, or Lime & Sweet Chilli Salmon with Rice & Salad (featuring our Lime Infused Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil from Supernature Oils).
