If you have ever had a curry from us, grabbed a coffee from staple hill on the way home, or had a pint down your local, this one is for you.
Right now, hospitality in this country is on its knees. Three pubs, bars and restaurants are closing their doors every single day. And a massive part of why is the tax we pay just to keep the lights on.
Here in the UK we pay 20 percent VAT on hospitality, one of the highest rates in the whole of Europe. Compare that to France, Spain and Italy where it is 10 percent. Germany pay just 7 percent. Ireland is dropping theirs to 9 percent. We are being taxed nearly double what our neighbours pay, and that is the difference between a business staying open and shutting for good.
Chef Tom Kerridge is leading a campaign called VATsTheProblem, asking the government to bring hospitality VAT down to a fair 10 percent. We are not saying scrap it. We are just asking for it to be fair.
But Tom cannot do this on his own, and neither can we. We need you. Whether you work in hospitality or you are just someone who loves a night out, a Sunday roast or a takeaway on a Friday, please take 30 seconds to sign.
