The Lazy Dog is the latest venture from Joby Andrews and Mike Cranney who are behind
The Pipe & Slippers and The Windmill. Our food here is simple but quality-driven with an emphasis on fresh local produce and hearty British cuisine, with a cracking Sunday roast to round off your week. Drinks-wise, the emphasis is on quality and range, with everything from real ales to cocktails available, all se
rved by friendly, well-trained staff. The pub was first open in 1851 by Job Gillam, the sawyer from Gillam’s Saw Mills situated behind the pub. In the old days the logs were sawed in pairs, the sawyer atop the log was the Top Dog and the one below The Underdog. As you can see from the sign out the front our underdog is more concerned with his pint and pie than doing any hard work! The design of the pub is inspired by the classic gin palace-style boozers of days gone by. In a time when good old-fashioned pubs are few and far between this one has been built to last. We are mindful of the fact that since the smoking ban many venues have had to adapt and focus their attentions on families, but we feel there is a need for a more grown-up orientated environment so kids are welcome in the bar up to 8pm. The large walled garden to the rear and the front garden benefit from hours of sunshine and the rear provides shelter from the rain.
