Byfleet Fire Station update - August 2024
Going back to last year in February 2023, Surrey County Council appointed a Project Manager along with a Listed Building Officer to ensure that the planned renovations would be sympathetic and in keeping with the Fire Station’s Grade II Listed status. Surrey drew up a suggested programme of works which was discussed and agreed with the Trust. Some further survey work was carried out, including checking the foundations and a paint survey. The proposed work was put out to tender last year and Croydon-based Knightsbridge Property Services were ultimately awarded the contract.
Then in June 2024 we were delighted to hear that work would finally begin. As you may have seen, fencing and scaffolding has now been erected around the building. Most of the 1923 building's roof has been stripped of tiles, to allow for the replacement of some of the wall plates which hold the roof to the walls as well as allowing for insulation material to be installed when restoring the roof. A new floor slab for the toilet area is now in place. Tests are taking place regarding the best material with which to remove the paint from the old brickwork and work continues on restoring the Victorian double doors to the older building.
It is hoped that the renovation will be completed towards the end of this year, but of course this will depend on how the works progress. We are all very excited at these developments and would like to thank Surrey County Council, and especially Cllr Amanda Boote for her great help and support.
In the meantime, the Trustees will be busy fundraising and working on the next steps to prepare the Fire Station for community use. We all look forward to seeing this lovely historic building receiving some care and attention very soon.
