Today, we at Sultanz thoroughly enjoyed celebration honouring one of Camborne’s greatest pioneers — Richard Trevithick 🚂
Born on April 13th, 1771, at Penhallick Bean Farmhouse, Trevithick changed the course of history with his bold engineering vision. In 1801, he achieved the incredible feat of powering the first steam carriage up Camborne Hill using high-pressure steam — a moment that helped spark the future of transport as we know it.
Just a few years later, in 1803, he built the “New Castle,” the world’s first working locomotive. His innovations didn’t stop there — his engines went on to power mills, barges, dredgers, and even farm machinery, shaping industries far beyond Cornwall.
Although he passed away in 1833 in Dartford, Kent, his legacy continues to inspire generations.
Each year, Camborne proudly celebrates his life and achievements with Trevithick Day — and we were honoured to join the festivities again this year on April 25th, 2026.
What an incredible way to remember a true trailblazer 👏
