The secret to a long and happy life?
According to one of the world’s top epidemiology boffins, humans can dramatically improve heart, gut and even mental health by sipping on AS MANY different wine grape varieties as possible.
There are 10,000 wine grape varieties around the globe and Professor T. Spector (who definitely doesn’t sound at all like a Bond villain) says that we should attempt to try as many of them as possible to reap the health benefits.
The revelation leaves some burning questions; if we complete all 10k do we unlock eternal life? And does the research validate our theory that people who drink nothing but Jam Shed choose a hollow and agonising fate?
To help enrich your life the we have picked out some bodacious wines from our website made using rare and lesser known grapes so you can tick them off. Please drink responsibly!
CILIEGIOLO, Tenuta Montauto, Tuscany £17-
Italian grape nerds can’t decide if Ciliegiolo is the parent or offspring of the more famous Sangiovese grape. Its name is means "cherry" and the wine is certainly brimming with plenty of red and black cherry flavours.
TARDANA, Vera de Estenas £15-
A native (and increasingly scarcely planted) white variety from the Spanish Levant. Ripens even later than red grapes resulting in fresh yet fully developed juice. Bueno.
NEGRETTE - Chateau Laurou, Fronton £13-
From the tiny appellation of Fronton in South West France, ‘La Négrette’ is grown almost nowhere else in the world. This wine is a blend but we also have a few bottles of their 100% Negrette online too.
SOLARIS - Velfrey Vineyard, Wales £19-
This tantalising grape is making a name for itself in the exciting vineyards of Wales. A canny hybrid variety packed with zesty citrus and aromatic floral character.
MAZUELO, Miguel Merino, Rioja £32-
Rioja fans will have imbibed this grape as a supporting act in Spanish blends but here’s an exceptional and rather rare 100% Mazuelo expression. Less than 3,000 bottles made!
ZIBIBBO, Mandraroosa, Sicily £13-
Some grape names roll off the tongue better than others. This one is yelled with aplomb at our HQ. It’s intensely aromatic and one that harks back through thousands of years.
