When we took on The Windmill, the plan was pretty simple… tidy the place up, serve good honest food, create room to grow, and hopefully make enough profit to keep the lights on! 🍻
But what we’ve learned over the last year is that you can’t buy what really makes a pub special.
The locals are the heartbeat of this place. They keep the bar alive, keep us grounded, keep us laughing, and make The Windmill the proper local it’s always been.
And lately, thanks to the World Cup, we’ve had loads of new faces through the door too. The best bit? Watching our regulars welcome everyone in like they’ve been coming here for years. That’s what a real pub is all about.
So whether you’ve been drinking here for 30 years or it’s your first pint with us, thanks for being part of it. The community keeps growing week by week, and David and I couldn’t be prouder to be looking after this little corner of Breadsall.

A year on from our first Tarby Day, we still feel incredibly honoured to be part of something so special.

Last year, as the new faces behind the bar, we spoke about the seat at the end of the bar that would always be there for your mate. Since then, we’ve shared stories, laughs, and plenty of pints with the people who continue to carry Tarby’s spirit with such pride and love.

Over the last year, not only has this amazing community grown, but so has our connection to it. Every day, David and I feel more and more a part of something truly special, and we’re so grateful for the support, friendships and memories we’ve made together.

This year, we’re excited to get right behind the fundraising once again and, with everyone’s support, hopefully achieve the same incredible result as last year . Seeing what this day means to so many people inspires us to do everything we can to help keep Tarby’s memory alive.

We’re proud to play a small part in something so meaningful.

Here’s to Tarby, and to all of you who continue to carry his spirit forward.

Well… where do I start? What a year.

Today marks exactly one year since I took the keys to The Windmill—and what a rollercoaster it’s been. Have I enjoyed it? Absolutely. Has it been hard work? 100%.

To put things into perspective, 161 pubs closed in the first three months of this year across England, Scotland, and Wales—around 2,400 jobs lost. It’s a tough time for our industry.

Pubs have always been my passion—not just for the drinks, but for what they represent: bringing people together. That’s what drives me every day—to play my part in keeping our great British pubs alive.

Being an independent business isn’t easy. Competing with big chains on price is tough. But one thing I’ll always do is reinvest back into our Windmill—into the place, the people, and the experience.

The biggest highlights this year? The growth in our food and, most importantly, our team.

David and I often talk about the family atmosphere we’ve built here. We’ve got real friendships, real support, and people who genuinely care—and I hope that shines through in every guest experience.

If we had to close the doors tomorrow, I’d still be incredibly grateful—for our locals, our regulars, and everyone who’s walked through the door, supported us, and come back again.

But we’re not done.

I promise to keep pushing forward, never settling for yesterday’s success, and continuing to grow—not just as a business, but as a community.
