We weren’t sure if we were going to make a post on this, but there’s a cause gaining real traction across hospitality that’s crucial to the longevity of independent sites.
Restaurants are forced to charge 20% VAT on every meal served, while many of the sector’s biggest costs, such as raw food, are VAT exempt. This makes it harder for hospitality businesses to offset VAT compared with many other industries.
Since 2006, the UK has lost around a quarter of its pubs, and independent restaurants are facing similar long-term pressures with rising costs, tight margins, and ongoing closures across the sector.
The campaign is calling for hospitality VAT to be reduced from 20% to 10%, to ease pressure on businesses and help protect the future of the industry.
