Happy Sunday from all of us at the Yarn Market Hotel. 💚

Sundays are made for slowing down. A stroll through Dunster’s medieval streets, a cup of tea in the sunshine, a walk on Exmoor, or simply sitting back and enjoying the view.

Whatever your perfect Sunday looks like, we hope it brings you a little time to switch off and recharge.

And if you’re thinking, “I could get used to this…”, we’d love to welcome you soon.

What a colourful few days we have had here in Dunster! 🎨

Our Artists’ Painting Holiday with Kathryn Wood has now come to an end, and we have loved seeing the creativity, conversations and beautiful work produced throughout the break.

Our guests enjoyed time in the studio, individual tuition and visits to inspiring locations around Exmoor — although, with views like these, choosing what to paint first might have been the hardest part!

A big thank you to Kathryn and everyone who joined us. We hope you returned home with happy memories, new ideas and perhaps a few paintings to find space for on the walls.

Are you an artist or tutor looking for a welcoming place to organise your own painting break or creative retreat? Get in touch with our team:

One of the best things about visiting Exmoor is that you never really know what little surprise the day will bring.

Back in June, we hosted a lovely group from the Netherlands and, during our Exmoor Safari coach trip, we stopped in Lynton and Lynmouth.

And what did we find? The Lyn Valley Classic — a brilliant event with classic cars, supercars, vintage vehicles and motorcycles, all set against the beautiful backdrop of the twin villages and the Exmoor coast.

Not a bad stop, really.

This is exactly why we love showing guests around Exmoor. One minute you are taking in the views, the next you are surrounded by beautiful cars, local events, lovely villages and the kind of community atmosphere that makes this area so special.

So, if you are thinking of visiting Exmoor, come and stay with us in Dunster. We will help you discover the places, the stories and sometimes even the unexpected events along the way.

5 reasons to visit Exmoor National Park… although we could easily make it 50.

1. The villages look like they were made for slow wandering. Dunster, Porlock, Selworthy, Lynton and Lynmouth… all with their own charm, views, little lanes and “let’s just have a quick look” moments that turn into a whole afternoon.

2. The nature is not shy. Moorland, woodland, rivers, coast, valleys, wild open spaces… Exmoor does not do boring scenery. It does the kind that makes you stop mid-sentence and reach for your camera.

3. The walking is properly good. From gentle strolls to bigger walking adventures, Exmoor has an amazing network of paths, bridleways and open countryside to explore. Perfect for walkers, wanderers and people who say “I’m not really a walker” and then end up loving it.

4. The wildlife is part of the magic. Exmoor ponies, red deer, birds, rare plants and ancient woodland… it is the sort of place where nature quietly reminds you who is actually in charge.

5. It makes you slow down. And honestly, we all need that. Fresh air, proper views, cosy villages, good food, and the feeling that you have stepped away from the rush for a little while.

So yes, Exmoor is worth the visit.
And if you need a base in the middle of all this beauty, we know a lovely hotel in Dunster. Funny coincidence.

Today we are giving a warm welcome to our Artists’ Painting Break guests.

Paintbrushes are ready. Views are ready. Exmoor is, as usual, showing off slightly.

We really do love organising these kinds of breaks at Yarn Market Hotel. Walking breaks, music breaks, craft breaks, painting breaks… basically, if it brings people together and gives them a good reason to spend a few days in Dunster, we are interested.

So, if you are an artist, tutor, maker, creative soul, or someone with a brilliant idea for a retreat — or as we like to call them, a break — get in touch with us.

We can provide the space, accommodation, food, local knowledge and a very lovely village to use as your backdrop.

You bring the idea. We will help with the rest.

Need a reason to come to Dunster?

We have a few. Actually, quite a lot.

From guided walking breaks across Exmoor, music weekends, creative craft escapes and festive stays, to family breaks, steam train days, castle visits, zoo trips and even stargazing under Exmoor’s dark skies… there is always something happening at Yarn Market Hotel.

And the best part? You do not have to plan every little detail yourself.

We are here, in the heart of Dunster, with good food, comfortable rooms, local knowledge and plenty of reasons to make a proper break of it.

So whether you are coming for the walking boots, the music, the crafts, the Christmas feeling, or simply because you need a few days away — have a look at our upcoming breaks and see what catches your eye.

Brilliant news for Yarn Market Hotel.

We are very proud to share that Yarn Market Hotel has received the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award 2026, placing us in the top 10% of hotels worldwide based on traveller reviews.

For us, this means a lot. Not because of the badge alone, but because it comes from our guests. From the people who stayed with us, walked through Dunster, explored Exmoor, joined our breaks, sat down for dinner, had conversations with our team, and took the time to leave kind words afterwards.

A huge thank you to every guest who reviewed us, recommended us, returned to us, or told someone else about our little hotel in Dunster.

And, of course, thank you to our team. Awards like this do not happen by accident. They come from the small things done every day, with care.

We are grateful, proud, and already looking forward to welcoming more of you to Dunster.

Dunster has a way of making you notice things.

The colours on the old buildings, the little streets, the views, the coast, the light across Exmoor… it is the sort of place where you suddenly understand why people want to paint.

This July, artist Kathryn Wood will be joining us at Yarn Market Hotel for our Artists’ Painting Holiday.

You can stay for 4 or 7 nights, enjoy daily one-to-one tuition, use the studio space during your stay, and visit different locations around Exmoor for inspiration.

And no, you do not need to arrive with years of experience or a very serious artist face.

All levels are welcome, including those who simply want to try something creative in a beautiful place.

The break includes full board accommodation, tuition, studio use, transport to painting locations, and we also have walks and activities for non-painting partners.

A few days in Dunster, a bit of creativity, good food, lovely views… not a bad way to spend July.
