Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who has supported this season’s 6 Red Series. It’s been fantastic to see so many players taking part and, even more importantly, to watch everyone’s game improve from week one right through to the Grand Final.
There could only be one winner, however, and it was Graham Scales who produced the goods when it mattered most.
After a couple of stuttering performances in his opening two group matches, where he struggled to overcome his handicap deficit, Graham faced Stevie Ellis in a thrilling winner-takes-all encounter for a place in the semi-finals. Stevie looked to have victory within his grasp, but an unfortunate in-off on the blue handed Graham the opportunity he needed. He held his nerve brilliantly, clearing the colours to sn**ch victory and book his place in the last four.
Awaiting him in the semi-final was Callum Wood, who had found excellent form by comfortably topping his group with three victories. Despite Callum’s impressive run, Graham proved just too strong on the night and progressed to the final.
Standing in his way was Richard Mackenzie. The final developed into a fascinating tactical battle, with colours regularly blocking pockets and making scoring difficult. The turning point came when an uncharacteristic safety from Richard left the green over the pocket, giving Graham the opening he had been waiting for. He took full advantage, clearing enough colours to seal the title and become the 6 Red Series Champion.
Richard can take plenty of positives from the evening after coming through his group unbeaten, including a hard-fought victory over Stevie Sturrock in a match that could have gone either way. In the semi-final he overcame Freddie Widgery Grant, who recovered superbly from a slow start to qualify after impressive wins over Jack Williamson and Regan Campbell.
Congratulations once again to Graham Scales on a deserved victory, and well done to every player who took part throughout the series. The standard continues to improve, and we can’t wait to see what next season has in store!
