Joy Ferndown and Sheena Dayman “the JOY lady” have collaborated for an amazing charity event. Both stories of the owner of Joy and Sheena is monumental.
The restaurant is called “Joy” because the word carries a deep cultural and historical meaning for our family. The name is inspired by the phrase “Joy Bangla”, which is a powerful and historic slogan from Bangladesh. “Joy Bangla” translates roughly to “Victory to Bengal” and became a rallying cry during Bangladesh’s struggle for independence in 1971. It symbolised hope, unity, pride, and the collective spirit of people striving for freedom and a better future.
For many Bangladeshis, “Joy” represents more than just happiness — it represents resilience, pride, and the celebration of identity and culture. By naming the restaurant “Joy,” we wanted to honour those values and share a positive message with everyone who walks through our doors.
The owner has worked in the food and hospitality industry for over 30 years. His journey began with a strong passion for cooking and learning authentic recipes. For five years he lived on his own, during which time he dedicated himself to cooking curries and traditional dishes completely from fresh ingredients. During that time he developed and refined many of the recipes, techniques, and flavours that later became part of his professional career in hospitality.
Throughout his career, his passion has always been about more than just serving food. He believes that hospitality is about creating a welcoming atmosphere where people feel comfortable, valued, and happy.
Naming the restaurant “Joy” reflects his personal mission: to bring joy to every customer who visits. Whether through great food, warm service, or a friendly environment, his goal has always been to make people leave with a smile and a positive experience.
The name therefore connects both cultural heritage and personal purpose — honouring the spirit of “Joy Bangla” while also representing the happiness and warmth he hopes to share with every guest.
We would like to thank everyone for the support over the past few years!
