Where the Monkey Sleeps

Where the Monkey Sleeps Serious about sandwiches.. and salads, soups, stews and smoothies! We've been serving seriously good scran and award-winning sandwiches in it's absence.

The Monkey was born in 2001 and much to the disappointment of its dotting parents, it’s slept ever since.

There were moments last year where I descended into the pit of rewatching 90s and early 2000s tv shows with more gusto than I am honestly comfortable admitting. There are some things that are best left in the teenage years and The O.C. is definitely one of them.

So this year I resolved to back away from Netflix and get reading. It’s hard to put my finger on what the difference is between a six hour streaming binge and a book that you just can’t put down but I have to admit I feel so much better for it.

I won’t lie part of it is probably that I’m finally starting to bridge the gap between the books I own and the books I’ve read. I won’t comment on whether the extremely high brow titles that are in my Zoom background have made it into my read list.

In the Argyle Street Monkey there is a quote by Francis Bacon above the bookshelves, ‘reading maketh a full man’. The books I’ve read so far this year have certainly filled me with joy, and in these COVID times that’s a pretty great thing.

Special shout out to all the bookshops - I can’t wait until your doors are open again. Until then, Happy World Book Day!

P.S. Please leave any and all reading suggestions below!

Jake’s Lunch - Week 5 Round Up

A week late. Apologies. Sometimes the less I’ve got on, the less I get done. Anyone else the same?

My main activity this week was anything snow related. It’s amazing when you’re not worrying about getting the shop open for 7am in blizzard like conditions (aka Beast for the East 2018) how you can really enjoy the snow so much more.

The highlight of the week was sledging with my nieces and nephew. Dragging my two year old Ez up the hill until my thighs burned was worth it for his ‘the was epic’ reaction every time we hurtled down.

Now the snow has melted, and the momentary respite from lockdown boredom is over, it’s back to posting sandwiches and trying figure out social media. Pray for me.

This week’s selection:-

1. Wild (green) Turkey - turkey, tomato, radish, rocket and salsa verde
2. Mister Piggy - bacon, cheddar, tomato chutney, rocket and mustard mayo
3. Sweet potato and chickpea curry with spinach
4. Bradley’s Enemy - chicken, salami, cheddar, leaves and red onion marmalade
5. John Stearne - chorizo, parmesan, tomatoes, chillies, leaves and mint and caper salsa

Jake’s Lunch - Week 4 Round Up

I listened to a phone in last week with Stephen Jardine to mark a year since the first COVID cases in the UK.

He was asking people what they missed the most about life before lockdown and honestly it was incredibly emotional hearing people’s stories.

From homeschooling parents trying to hold down full time jobs, and students living away from home for the first time to Marjorie, a blind woman who has been navigating social distancing as a blind person, it really put my own struggles into perspective!

On a lighter note, I was delighted to hear that many people were missing going out to cafes and restaurants. I missing that too and can’t wait to be see all your faces again and serving up some sandwiches!

In the meantime I’m making the most of testing out brand new recipes on Jake!

This week’s selection:-

1. B.R.T. - bacon, rocket, tomato, and mustard mayo
2. Et tu Brute? - turkey, comté, dill pickle, sauerkraut, and honey mustard mayo
3. The Tuff Guy - smoked ham, cheddar, rocket, mango chutney, and rocket
4. Leonardo da Verde - salami, sundried tomatoes, artichokes, and salsa verde
5. Not suitable for Bradley - turkey, chorizo, cheddar, rocket, lemon mayo, and chilli jam

Jake’s Lunch - Week 3 Round Up

What’s been on your lunchtime menu during WFH? A friend of mine told me she’d had the same cheese and ham sandwich every day for the last 6 months. No sauce. No nothing.

I think I was so taken aback by this information that this week I went big on the sauce. When it comes to sandwiches, the saucier the better in my opinion!

Agreed?

This week’s selection:-

1. Ruebens - salt beef, sauerkraut, dill pickle, Russian dressing
2. Wiley Coyote - turkey, salami, red onion, leaves, lemon juice and tomato chutney
3. Auntie B - turkey, chorizo, mozzarella, tomato, leaves and chilli jam
4. Wrathbone - chorizo, comté, red onion, tomato chutney and American mustard
5. The Ex-Pat - roast beef, parmesan, rocket, red onion marmalade, and whole grain mustard

Jake’s Lunch - Week 2 Round Up

Prior to lockdown I think the longest I had taken off work in one go was a week. I feel very blessed to have a job that I absolutely love but owning a small business can be full on at times.

Like so many people all over the country the last 10 months have been a radical change in lifestyle for me. All of a sudden my pace of life has come to a stop. With none of you wonderful folk to serve and no children (yet, mum!) to homeschool I have found myself alone for big stretches of time for the first time, maybe ever.

It’s been difficult at times but one of the joys has been taking my time over tasks that I would usually try to squeeze into as short a window of time as possible. These days I leave the car at home and do all my shopping on foot around the the many amazing local shops that the West End has to offer. This week, almost all of the ingredients have been purchased in those shops!

This week’s selection:-

1. Artie’s Garden - artichokes, sundried tomatoes, carrot, caramelised red onion houmous
2. The Beefcake - smoked beef, peppers, red onion, cheddar, horseradish and rocket
3. Sausage and bean stew with sweet potatoes and parsnips
4. Leftover roast chicken broth with vegetables and barley
5. Tomba’s Mate - chorizo, mozzarella, tomato, rocket and oregano and basil mayo

Let’s talk about bread

During the first lockdown I managed to resist the temptation to throw myself into bread making.

Apart from anything else I was seriously concerned about my lack of restraint when it comes to bread and butter - one of life’s greatest gifts.

However, with a predicted beast from the east part two headed our way at the end of the month, I’ve decided to throw caution to the wind and fully embrace carbs and insulating for the winter!

Not known for doing anything by halves, I’ve officially fallen down the rabbit hole and am one step away from setting alarms in the middle of the night to check on my dough.

I have to give a big shout out to John Kirkwood. I have never met this man but his YouTube videos are a joy to behold. He doesn’t show his face, but I picture him looking like Santa all smiley and jolly. Check his videos out.

1. Panini Rolls. Full disclosure not as good as the ones we get in the shop. They’ve been making bread since 1973 so I need a little time to catch up!
2. Bloomer Loaf. I substituted white flour for wholemeal. It didn’t rise as well as John’s but still tasted pretty good.
3. Ciabatta Rolls. Favourite so far. Really wet dough though so definitely my hardest bake so far.
4. Even my book is calling out to me about bread making. Weird. My Àntonia was first published in 1918. Clearly, they weren’t as into sourdough back then.
5. My sourdough starter. Gifted to me by my brother. Resisting the urge to name it. Only at the feeding stage. Baking coming soon...

Jake’s Lunch - Week 1 Round Up

One of the things I missed most in 2020 was feeding folk. Whether it was through the doors of The Monkey or in our flat I have some of my best chats when there’s food involved.

With it looking like it’s going to be a while before flat dinners or The Monkey is up and running again I am channelling all my energies into making food for the one person I still can cook for - Jake!

It’s all very 1950s housewife of me but honestly it has brought me so much joy making his packed lunch this week.

Jake is a wonderful person to cook for, everything I make seems to be the best thing he’s ever had whether or not anyone else would say the same I guess we’ll find out once lockdown is over! For what it’s worth his favourite this week was the Stoofa Deluxe. Sometimes the oldies really are the best. Can’t wait to be making them in bulk for you lot some time soon(ish?)

1. The 27 - Ham, comté, tomato, red onion, cucumber, dill pickle, leaves, and sage and balsamic mayo
2. Lamb stew with rainbow carrots, parsnips and peas
3. Green Piggy - porchetta, tomato, red onion, salsa verde and leaves
4. Stoofa Deluxe - roast chicken, red onion, cheddar, bacon and sage, thyme and balsamic mayo
5. Lentil and vegetable soup

155/155km DONE.

Thank you so much to everyone who has given, run with me, and sent messages of encouragement.

I can’t believe that we have raised more than £1300 for Glasgow City Mission.

This year has been a hard one for The Monkey and I know many of you too but to end the year on such a positive note is amazing!

I hope and pray that 2021 has great things in store for us all. I for one hope to be back behind the counter and serving you wonderful people.

Until then, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
