We just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has commented on our recent posts about The Anchorage. We've spent a lot of time reading through all your comments, memories and ideas, and they've genuinely meant a lot to us.

For those who don't know us, I'm Gillian Roszkowska and my husband Neil Hawley and I are currently in the final stages of buying The Anchorage from David and Anthony. It's taking a little longer than we'd hoped, but we're keeping everything crossed that we'll be able to call it ours very soon.

Coming home to Anglesey means so much to me. I went to Llanfawr Primary School, Holyhead County School and Bangor University, and my parents ran Cae Braenar Siop from 1969 until 1994. Although I've been away for many years, Anglesey has always felt like home.

I would also like to say how incredibly grateful we are to David and Anthony. Throughout this whole process they have been kind, patient and hugely supportive. We know how much hard work their family has put into The Anchorage over the years, and we feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to continue its story. We certainly don't take that responsibility lightly.

One thing we've realised very quickly is how many people care deeply about The Anchorage. The memories people have shared have been wonderful to read, and we've been making notes of all the suggestions too.

Neil and I are both teachers, so we're definitely not arriving with deep pockets! We'll have to take things one step at a time, doing what we can when we can, but we're excited about the journey ahead.

To begin with, our main focus will be getting the rooms ready, looking after our guests, providing a simple but lovely breakfast for those staying with us, serving good coffee and cakes, and creating welcoming bar and lounge spaces for both locals and visitors to enjoy.

We're sure we'll have plenty to learn along the way and there will no doubt be challenges, but we really want to build something the community can be proud of. We may not be able to do everything straight away, but we'll always listen and we'll always try our best.

Thank you again for all your support. Please keep sharing your ideas and memories. We love reading them and they are helping us shape our plans for the future.

Hopefully we'll see many of you in person before too long.

Gill & Neil

The Future of The Anchorage Hotel

As many of you know, we're hoping to take over The Anchorage later this month and we couldn't be more excited.

Gill grew up in Holyhead and has many happy memories of The Anchorage, so we know just how special this place is to so many people. Over the last few months we have heard so many people share their memories. We also know that we have some very big shoes to fill.

Our immediate focus will be on providing great accommodation for visitors and creating a welcoming space where both locals and guests can relax and enjoy the incredible views.

But we'd love to hear from you.

One thing we've heard time and time again is that the area is missing a place where people can simply meet up for a coffee, a chat, a drink, or a community event.

So we'd like to ask:

What would you like to see at The Anchorage?

Would you be interested in things such as:

Coffee and cake?
Chess,, board game or cards evenings?
Walking groups?
Book clubs?
Live music?
Craft groups?

Or do you have other ideas?

We're looking forward to becoming part of the community and we'd love to hear your thoughts as we begin this exciting new chapter.

Please leave your ideas in the comments below

That’s it from us at the Anchorage. We finish trading today after 52 years. We opened back in 1972, by our parents Mike and Marion Rylance, and are proud to have seen the business through to today. Unfortunately, time has caught up with us now and it’s time to retire and pass on the baton to someone else. It’s been an honour and a pleasure. Through all the good times and some hard times too. There are too many memories to capture here, but we’re sure they will remain with us all. Thank you to everyone who turned out this week and shared your stories from the past and celebrated together.

Thank you to the many staff who have been a part of the Anchorage over the years - we remember you all. Thank you to the team who have seen us all the way through to the end, in the kitchen, the bar and the hotel, we couldn’t have done it without you. A special thank you to our longest serving members of staff who have been with us over 15 years; Ceinwen, Karen, Dawn, Lisa, Stacey and Jan. It’s been a pleasure working with you. Thank you for your dedication and hard work!

Thank you to our wives, Jane and Angela, and our families for all their support over the years. It’s been a family business throughout (with many other families involved too).

Lastly, but certainly not least, thank you very much to all of our fantastic customers. Your loyalty, generosity and commitment over the years have been the foundation of it all. It’s been a great pleasure of our lives serving this community and for that we are deeply grateful.

We’re looking forward to enjoying our retirement over the other side of a bar for once. We will remain open for accommodation until a new owner takes over, however it’s goodbye to the bar and restaurant. We look forward to continuing to see you all out and about in the area.

Diolch yn fawr iawn!

Sincere Thanks,
Anthony and David
