The power of creativity to build community and express emotions is shining through an inspiring initiative across Kindera Living communities in Ontario.
The project began at Eatonville Care Centre and has since spread to Anson Place Care Centre and other communities, bringing people together through art and shared experiences.
Each participant, whether a team member, person we support, volunteer, family member, or community partner, is invited to paint a small canvas square. There are no rules and no expectations about artistic ability. Some choose to paint flowers, landscapes, hearts, or abstract designs, while others add meaningful words, symbols, or memories that tell their story.
Together, these individual pieces create something much bigger: a powerful reflection of connection, identity, and community.

In long-term care, team members carry more than schedules, medications, and care plans. They carry stories. They witness loss, resilience, loneliness, recovery, and the quiet emotional weight that comes with caring deeply for others every day. Many long-term care workers experience what is known as ...

"We must always remember we are working in people’s home, they are not living in our workplace."
One of the biggest challenges in care is remembering that what feels normal to us as team members can sometimes make a home feel more like a workplace.
Think about your own home. How would it feel if people walked through your living room without saying anything, talked about shifts and tasks all day, wore uniforms, gathered around staff stations, and focused on routines rather than relationships?
Small changes can make a big difference. Sharing a cup of tea, sitting and chatting, avoiding work jargon, and creating a warm, relaxed atmosphere all help people feel that this is truly their home.
What is one thing you could do today to reduce the feeling of being ‘at work’ and increase the feeling of being ‘at home’?

Great to see many members of the Merlin Park ‘Unit 6’ team in scrubbing the scrubs and embracing wearing fun and colourful clothes - and to see some lovely new murals in the hallways. The little black cat was suggested by one of the women living in the home.

Here Neil, one of the nurses is bringing some of the sights of London in her new shirt!

Today is ! What is your favourite chocolate bar? What country has the best chocolate?
Did you know that chocolate has a smell that helps you relax and reduce stress? Is there enough chocolate availability in your service?

“Fall in love with the world .. because it’s still beautifully yours.”

What a wonderful affirmation of a life still lived well with a diagnosis of dementia.

This is a light we try to shine in all the work we do at Meaningful Care Matters.

What do you look for in a care home, hospital or day service that tells you the care is truly ‘good’?
Is it the smiles on people’s faces?
The way team members speak to people?
A warm and welcoming environment?
Opportunities for choice, independence and purpose?
Or simply the feeling that people are treated with kindness, dignity and respect?
We would love to hear your thoughts!
What are the signs that give you confidence that a service is providing good care?

What can you see in this lovely photo from St Joseph’s Butterfly Home in Ireland, which tell you this is really ?
