Dear Kanya,
It is difficult to put into words the impact you have had on our lives, our community, and the countless people whose paths you crossed.
We remember first meeting you at Black on the Square in 2023. From that very moment, your warmth, kindness, and generosity of spirit stood out. You had an incredible ability to make everyone feel valued, whether they were an artist, entrepreneur, community leader, or someone meeting you for the very first time.
As two Nigerian sisters growing up, we watched the MOBOs with pride. They represented excellence, possibility, and a celebration of Black culture at a level that simply didn’t exist elsewhere. Never could we have imagined that one day we would not only meet the woman behind that vision, but also have the privilege of becoming part of the community you built.
When The Flygerians took residency at House of MOBO, it felt like a full-circle moment. Kanya, you created spaces where Black businesses, creatives, musicians, and entrepreneurs could thrive. You didn’t just open doors; you built entire rooms for people to step into and succeed.
What touched us most was that despite all your achievements, you remained humble, approachable, and deeply invested in people. You always took the time to speak, to listen, to encourage, and to uplift. Your passion for Black music, culture, and community was not just a mission it was who you were.
Your legacy is far greater than any award show, building, or title. Your legacy lives in the opportunities you created, the confidence you inspired, and the generations who now believe they belong because of the path you carved.
Thank you for your vision. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for believing in us and so many others.
