Japanese documentary filmmaker Toru Kubota was detained in 2022 for documenting protests in Myanmar after the military coup. Since his release, he has reportedly been unable to re-enter the country. But rather than step back, he redirected his work supporting exiled Myanmar journalists and filmmakers based in Mae Sot, along the Thai-Myanmar border, through access to equipment, training, and a pathway to keep telling the stories the world still needs to see.

That matters.

Because when authoritarian violence becomes prolonged, one of the greatest risks is not only repression on the ground, it is erosion of attention abroad. Crises that remain unresolved too often become normalized. Coverage slows. Audiences move on. Institutions look elsewhere.

And yet the stakes in Myanmar have not diminished.

What stands out in this story is not only Kubota’s personal courage, but the strategic value of supporting local storytellers who continue documenting reality under impossible conditions. In moments like this, media is not peripheral. It is part of the civic infrastructure that preserves truth, dignity, and public memory.

This is a reminder that solidarity is not always loud. Sometimes it looks like showing up with tools, training, trust, and a long-term commitment to visibility.

When a crisis fades from international headlines but not from people’s daily lives, what does responsible attention look like?

For many young people in Myanmar, studying in the UK represents years of hard work, financial sacrifice, and determination. The United Kingdom has long served as an academic beacon for students from Myanmar, providing opportunities for world-class education and fostering strong educational ties between our countries.

The sudden suspension of student visas disrupts not only individual lives but also decades of academic exchange.

While the British government has stated that the suspension is related to security concerns and misuse of the student visa system, available data suggests that the issue is more complex and should be addressed with targeted solutions rather than a blanket ban.

For example, data from 2025 indicates that approximately 31% of Myanmar students (around 960 individuals) in the UK claimed asylum, meaning that 69% of Myanmar students did not make asylum claims and remained genuine students pursuing their studies.
By comparison, the total number of asylum claims made by students from several other countries was significantly higher: …… To read more click on the link and please sign.
