Two Rural Theatres, One Shared Vision 🇯🇵 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We’re delighted to announce that CatStrand has officially twinned with Bird Theatre, Tottori, Japan, with the partnership formally marked on 14 June 2026.

Both organisations share a remarkable story: each is based in a former school building, rooted in a small rural community, and dedicated to creating ambitious, thought-provoking arts experiences far beyond what might be expected from places of fewer than 5,000 people.

This week we were honoured to welcome friends from Bird Theatre to CatStrand, where we celebrated the beginning of what we hope will be a long and inspiring friendship between our communities in Dumfries & Galloway and Tottori Prefecture.

This partnership reflects a shared belief in the importance of culture, creativity and community, and in the unique role that rural arts venues can play in bringing people together and enriching lives.

We look forward to sharing ideas, supporting artistic exchange, and exploring new opportunities together in the years ahead.

What connects a rural community in South West Scotland with a village in Japan?

That question lies at the heart of Towa Mura, an international collaboration between writer Tom Pow, the musicians of The Galloway Agreement, and the acclaimed Bird Theatre from Tottori, Japan.

Exploring shared experiences of rural life, depopulation and resilience, Towa Mura blends poetry, theatre and music into a powerful story that is both local and universal.

Last week, Bruce McKenzie was filming for ITV Lookaround, speaking with Nao Miyauchi and Mathew Zajac about the project and the creative journey behind it.

The interview highlights the connections between Scotland and Japan and the way collaboration across cultures can shape new work.

A feature coming soon on ITV Lookaround.
