Not to be missed, Golowan Festival is the heartbeat of Penzance and the highlight of our year.

Meaning ‘midsummer celebrations’ in Cornish, the week-long series of vibrant events has been run by the brilliant team since its revival 36 years ago.

Working with and everyone in our hometown comes together to organise, volunteer, fundraise and take part in the festivities that hark back to old traditions.

You’ll see the best of Penzance dancing and parading through the streets, peaking on Mazey Day, which celebrates the Feast of St John, when fires are lit to drive away evil spirits and honour the sun.

You’ll hear the “oggy oggy oggy, oi oi oi” chant a lot. It originated here, when it was shouted down into the mines by wives to tell their husbands their pasties were ready!
