Matthew 10:34-11:1

‘I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.’

At that time: Jesus instructed his Apostles: ‘Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

‘Whoever receives you, receives me, and whoever receives me, receives him who sent me. The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.’

When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

Matthew 13:1-23

‘A sower went out to sow.’

At that time: Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the lake. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.’

Then the disciples came and said to him, ‘Why do you speak to them in parables?’ And he answered them, ‘To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: “You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.” For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

‘Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.’

Saint Benedict of Nursia (c. 480 – 547 AD) is widely revered as the "Father of Western Monasticism" and is recognized by the Catholic Church as the patron saint of Europe and students. Born into a distinguished Roman family in Norcia, Italy, he turned his back on a privileged life to live as a hermit in a cave in Subiaco. His fame for holiness drew many followers, leading him to found twelve small monasteries there before ultimately establishing the famous Abbey of Monte Cassino.

He is best known for authoring The Rule of Saint Benedict, a revolutionary guide for communal monastic living that is defined by the motto ora et labora ("pray and work"). This balanced approach to daily life, spirituality, and study shaped the cultural and intellectual foundation of medieval Europe.

St. Benedict’s legacy is vast and continues to influence spirituality, education, and theology today. His most notable aspects include:

1. The Rule of St. Benedict

The Rule of St. Benedict is a collection of 73 short chapters detailing the spiritual and practical running of a monastery.

The Philosophy: The Rule is celebrated for its moderation, flexibility, and common sense.

The Routine: It divides the day into balanced increments of liturgical prayer (Opus Dei), manual labor, and spiritual reading (lectio divina).

The Influence: It is a foundational text of Western monasticism and provides the framework for the Benedictines (also known as the Order of Saint Benedict, or O.S.B.).

2. The Saint Benedict Medal

The Saint Benedict Medal is a highly popular sacramental item used for protection against evil.

Front: Depicts St. Benedict holding a cross and his Rule, flanked by a raven and a broken cup (representing attempts on his life).

Back: Features a cross containing the initials of powerful protective Latin prayers, notably Vade Retro Satana ("Begone Satan").

Patronage: Patron saint of Europe, students, monastics, farmers, and civil engineers.

Feast Day: Celebrated on 11 July in the General Roman Calendar

Matthew 10:16-23

‘It is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father.’

At that time: Jesus instructed his Apostles: ‘Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.’

Saint Augustine Zhao Rong (1746–1815) is a celebrated Chinese Catholic priest, martyr, and the first Chinese-born diocesan priest to be martyred. He is the lead figure of the 120 Martyr Saints of China canonized by Pope John Paul II in the year 2000.

His remarkable life and legacy as a soldier, missionary, and martyr are notable in several key areas:

Early Life & Conversion: Born in Qing China, Zhao Rong joined the imperial Qing dynasty army at the age of 20. During the anti-Christian persecutions of the 18th century, he was assigned to guard Christian prisoners. One of his prisoners was the French missionary Bishop Gabriel-Taurin Dufresse. Zhao Rong was deeply moved by the bishop's kindness and peaceful demeanor under suffering. He asked to be baptized, taking the name Augustine.

The First Chinese Diocesan Priest: After his baptism, Augustine went to the seminary to study for the priesthood. Just five years after his baptism, he was ordained and became the first Chinese-born diocesan priest in history. He ministered to local communities across the mountainous regions of Sichuan, where he was known to have successfully converted and baptized many.

Martyrdom: During a new wave of anti-Christian persecutions ordered by the Jiaqing Emperor, Father Augustine was arrested. He was severely tortured and repeatedly ordered to renounce his faith. He steadfastly refused, famously declaring, "I am willing to accept all kinds of punishments, but the one thing I cannot do is abandon my Lord Jesus Christ." Due to his advanced age and the harsh prison conditions, he succumbed to his injuries in the winter of 1815.

Canonization & Feast Day: Father Augustine Zhao Rong was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1900 and officially canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000, alongside 119 companions who were martyred in China between 1648 and 1930. The Catholic Church universally commemorates their feast day on July 9.

Matthew 10:1-7

‘Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.’

At that time: Jesus called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve Apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” ’

Matthew 9:32-38

‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few.’

At that time: Behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to Jesus. And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marvelled, saying, ‘Never was anything like this seen in Israel.’ But the Pharisees said, ‘He casts out demons by the prince of demons.’

And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’

Saint Maria Goretti (October 16, 1890 – July 6, 1902) is one of the youngest and most widely venerated saints in the Catholic Church, often referred to as the "Little Saint of Great Mercy". Born into a poverty-stricken farming family in Corinaldo, Italy, she was a devout, cheerful girl who never learned to read or write, yet possessed a remarkably deep faith.

After her father died of malaria, Maria’s family was forced to share a modest home with another tenant family, the Serenellis, in Le Ferriere near Nettuno. As her mother and older siblings worked in the fields, Maria took on household duties, cooking, sewing, and caring for her younger sister.

When Maria was just 11 years old, Alessandro Serenelli, an 18-year-old neighbour, made unwanted romantic and sexual advances toward her. Despite his threats of violence, she continually rebuffed him, famously declaring: "No! It is a sin! God does not want this!"

On July 5, 1902, while Maria was home alone, Alessandro violently attacked her in an attempt to force himself upon her. Because Maria fiercely resisted to protect her virtue, Alessandro stabbed her 14 times with a dagger. She was rushed to the hospital in Nettuno, where she underwent surgery without anesthesia but ultimately succumbed to her injuries 20 hours later.

The defining element of St. Maria Goretti's legacy is her heroic forgiveness. During her final 20 hours in the hospital, she expressed deep concern for her mother and, crucially, forgave her attacker, stating: "For the love of Jesus, I forgive him, and I want him to be with me in Paradise."

Alessandro was sentenced to 30 years in hard labor. Initially unrepentant, he reportedly experienced a transformative dream years later where Maria offered him white lilies (a traditional symbol of purity) that burned his hands. Following this, he repented, fully embraced his faith, and upon his release 27 years later, sought the forgiveness of Maria's mother, who readily granted it.

Canonization: Pope Pius XII canonized Maria Goretti on June 24, 1950, in St. Peter's Square. It was the first open-air canonization in Church history, drawing a crowd of over half a million people. Notably, both her mother and Alessandro Serenelli were in attendance.

Patronage: She is the patron saint of youth, teenagers, purity, chastity, and victims of r**e or violent crime.

Feast Day: Celebrated globally in the Catholic Church on July 6.

Saint Thomas the Apostle (also known as Judas Thomas or Didymus, which means "the Twin") is one of the original twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, highly revered for his role in Biblical history and the subsequent spread of Christianity. Best remembered as "Doubting Thomas" due to his initial skepticism of the Resurrection, his journey from intense inquiry to unwavering faith remains one of the most celebrated stories in Christian tradition.
The "Doubter": Thomas was absent when the risen Christ first appeared to the disciples in the Upper Room. He declared he would not believe unless he could physically touch the nail marks in Jesus' hands and place his hand in His side. Eight days later, Jesus appeared directly to Thomas, inviting him to touch the wounds. Upon doing so, Thomas made the first explicit declaration of Jesus’ divinity in the Gospels: "My Lord and my God!"
Patron Saint: Because of his early profession as a carpenter and the many churches he built, he is the patron saint of architects, builders, and geometricians.

Matthew 9:1-8

‘They glorified God, who had given such authority to men.’

At that time: Getting into a boat Jesus crossed over and came to his own city. And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.’ And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, ‘This man is blaspheming.’ But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, ‘Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say, “Rise and walk”? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins’ — he then said to the paralytic — ‘Rise, pick up your bed and go home.’ And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
