Thanks to all that have helped bring our food-waste awareness raising 'Pop-Down Cafe' (since turned 'Pop Down Project') to life. The last three years have been largely shaped by those that have shared this space to talk, create and eat with us. Although it won't be continuing, we hope to have shown that social spaces/projects can be started by anyone, anywhere.

Love and light and fine (bin) food

Hello all! Its that time of year again for Transition and we're getting ready to smash out another round of tackling waste in halls of residence when the semester is out!

Tomorrow the 17th from 11-1 (maybe 2 if we're in the flow) I'll be down sorting out the shed at Woodburn terrace (pretty much on East sands next to the Transition office).

I'll be bringing bin-delights from my nights raid around town and some musicaaaaa.

Grab a mate and see you there x

Last week, as well as serving fine (bin) food, Pop-Down hosted a jewellery making workshop guided by the wonderful Alba and her coconut crafts and with inspiration from my aunt Sabine who makes earrings from inner tubes of bike tyres!

Another craft session will follow soon!

Sharing the love x

Meet other waste warriors!

'According to the sustainability charity Wrap, efforts to reduce edible waste have done nothing to decrease the estimated 10 million tonnes of food that has been binned every year since 2012. That's enough loaves of bread almost to fill Wembley Stadium; enough milk to fill 230 Olympic-sized swimming pools; and the weight of 365 blue whales in bananas alone. Food waste within homes accounted for more than 70% of this'

Meet the people using innovative approaches to tackle the problem of food waste.

Calling Out to the Waste Watchers of St Andrews!

A dear friend of mine has been out day after day over the past week at the end of West Sands picking up plastic and the plastic keeps coming in! Marjory just called me to say that there is literally tonnes on the beach right now and she reckons we need 30-40 people to sort it out!!!

Tomorrow morning, who's a keen bean for keeping the beach scene clean??

I'm gonna head out around 10am and smash this out!

More the merrier! x

Ps these photos are just the beginning!

This: Co-op to sell food past its 'best before' dates!

Stores in East Anglia will sell expired dried and tinned items for 10p in a bid to cut food waste.

Some of you may know John Hunter, either as the guy with the two dogs on market street or through reading the St Andrews courier (his story).

His homelessness was due to the fact that he had to (even temporarily) give up his dogs for accommodation by Fife Council. He's set up this petition to change the policy and hopefully make sure that no one has to decide between a roof over their heads or the own pets again.

It would be great to show him support by getting on this one!
Peace. x

After Fife Council rejected me for temporary accommodation, I became homeless. It was because I have two dogs (both relaxed and obedient) - my family. This petition is to change policy and make sure that nobody should have to be separated from their beloved pet(s) just for temporary accommodation.

what's the craic, greasy goblins? I know that pop-down has been pretty quiet in recent months, but this is a reminder that we are still very much here (on 11b hope street) and digging those there recycled vibes. if you dig them too then keep a beady eye on this page for our freashest cafe-clothes events. if you would like to be involved in the running of the cafe or would like to do a society collaboration with Pop Down then feel free to message us on this page or get in contact directly with Sam, Vivi or me (Reuben).

in the meantime we hope to satisfy your green green hunger with the knowledge that clothes are being distributed to those who need them in St Andrews and a wee shout out to a Mr. Stan Usovicz who donated (amonst much else) shoes ideal for the furry feet of sustainable samwise. (see picture below, credit to Sam himself, so a golden star to him).

there was a young rapper called Stan
Sam and i were his favourite fans
but he's gone back to the States
through those star-spangled gates
oh how we'll miss that young poet called Stan.
