Ten years ago, running a café was challenging. In 2026, it's a completely different level.
Since 2016, almost every major cost of running a café has climbed. Staff wages have increased significantly, food and drink suppliers have faced years of inflation and supply chain disruption, energy bills have surged, rent and business costs have risen, and employer costs continue to grow.
What many customers don't see is that cafés aren't simply charging more for the sake of it. Every coffee poured, every breakfast served, and every homemade cake comes with higher costs behind the scenes than ever before.
Independent cafés are constantly balancing quality, fair wages for their team, and keeping prices as affordable as possible. It's a difficult balancing act, especially when customers are feeling the pressure too.
Yet big corporate business offering like for like food and drink, will increase their prices, lower their quality, size, and service and customers are still loyal! 🤦🏼♀️🤷♂️
So next time you visit your local café,
remember you're not just buying a coffee or a meal—you're helping to support local jobs, small businesses, and the people working hard every day to keep their doors open.
Your support means more than ever.
