Durlston Country Park, Dorset 🌿
320 acres of cliffs, meadows & Victorian wonder on the Jurassic Coast
A little history…
Durlston’s story stretches back over a thousand years. The limestone grasslands were first cleared from ancient oak forest around 1000 AD, and traces of Saxon field systems can still be found in the landscape today. In the 19th century, Victorian entrepreneur George Burt transformed the headland — building Durlston Castle in 1887 (as a clifftop restaurant, not a fortress!) and commissioning the extraordinary Great Globe: a 40-tonne sphere of Portland limestone engraved with an 1880s map of the world. Dorset County Council established the park in the 1970s, and in 2008 it was awarded National Nature Reserve status.
Why visit? Here are our favourite reasons 👇
🌍 The Great Globe — a one-of-a-kind Victorian curiosity sitting right on the clifftop. Nothing else like it in the world.
🏰 Durlston Castle — free entry to the beautifully restored visitor centre, with a café, gallery, live cliff camera and a spectacular film about the Jurassic Coast.
🦋 Wildlife in abundance — 250+ bird species, 33 breeding butterflies, 500 wildflowers, rare orchids, and dolphins spotted regularly offshore.
🥾 Five waymarked trails — from gentle woodland strolls to dramatic hikes on the South West Coast Path, with views to the Isle of Wight and Old Harry Rocks.
⛏️ Tilly Whim Caves — historic limestone cliff quarries carved into the headland, a fascinating remnant of Purbeck’s stone industry.
💡 Anvil Point Lighthouse — a working lighthouse adding maritime drama to the clifftop walk.
Entry to the park is free, and it’s open sunrise to sunset every day of the year. Just one mile south of Swanage — don’t miss it! 🌊

Stop the "begging eyes" routine! 🐶🚫 If you’ve ever felt the guilt of tucking into a scoop of Purbeck Ice Cream while your four-legged bestie watches with heartbreaking intensity, we have the solution.

Introducing Pawbeck—the iced treat that finally lets your dog join the "Ice Cream Crawl" without the tummy troubles! 🍦🐕

Here’s why it’s the "Ulti-mutt" treat:
* Dairy-Free & Gentle: We know many pups are lactose intolerant, so Pawbeck is 100% dairy-free. No bloating, just wagging.
* Strawberry Fields Forever: Made with real strawberry puree. It’s natural, delicious, and contains zero artificial nasties. 🍓
* Designed for Every Snout: Our wide-neck pots are specifically crafted for brachycephalic friends (we’re looking at you, Pugs and Bulldogs!) so they can reach every last drop without a struggle. 🐽
* Eco-Friendly: 100% recyclable packaging, because we love the Dorset countryside as much as your dog loves chasing sticks in it. 🌍
Whether you're hitting the beach or cooling off after a hike in the Purbeck Hills, make sure there's a tub of Pawbeck ready to go.

Swanage, Dorset 🌊 One of England’s best-kept seaside secrets — and the perfect base for the Isle of Purbeck.

The history, in brief…
Swanage’s story is rooted in stone. The Purbeck stone trade dates back to the 1st century AD , and for centuries this was a working quarry town shipping limestone to London. The boats returned from the city loaded with cast iron bollards, relics and monuments as ballast — and you can still spot them around the town today. It was Victorian entrepreneur William Morton Pitt who transformed Swanage into a seaside resort, opening a luxury hotel that was later renamed the Royal Victoria Hotel after Princess Victoria stayed here in 1833. The rest, as they say, is history.
Why go?

🏖️ The beach — a sweeping, sandy Blue Flag bay, generally calm and ideal for swimming, with beach huts for hire and great facilities for families
🚂 The steam railway — lovingly restored by volunteers after the mainline closed in 1972, it now runs six miles through the Purbeck countryside past the ruins of Corfe Castle all the way to Norden

🪨 Old Harry Rocks — dramatic chalk sea stacks on the eastern tip of the Jurassic Coast, reachable on foot from nearby Studland

🌿 Durlston Country Park — a National Nature Reserve on the clifftop, just a mile’s walk from town (see our previous post!)
🛳️ The Victorian pier — opened in 1897 and home to Britain’s oldest diving school, with daily boat trips to Poole and beyond

🎶 Festivals galore — jazz, folk and blues festivals, plus the Mowlem Theatre hosting over 200 film screenings and 100 live performances a year
Charming, unhurried, and utterly Dorset. Don’t just pass through — stay a while. 🦋
