❄️As we head into this spell of cold weather – with snow already on the moors and the winds coming in sharp off the sea – we just wanted to share a gentle reminder from our team here at Whitby Coastguard.

Winter is one of the most beautiful times along our coastline. The cliffs look striking in frost and snow, the harbour feels peaceful, and those quiet walks can be the best kind of head-clearing. But it’s also a time when things can change quickly under your feet. Paths freeze, cliff edges become slippery, and that inviting stretch of sand can hide fast-moving tides and deep, icy water.

We’re not here to tell you what you must do – you know your own adventures best. We just see the other side of it.

This year alone we’ve attended so many incidents involving slips, cold-water shock, and people getting caught out in the half-light. None of them expected their day to end with us turning up.

So if you’re heading out for a walk, a photo of the Abbey in the snow, taking the dog for a run, or just nipping down to watch the waves, please look after yourselves. Let someone know where you’re going, stick to solid paths when you can, and be mindful near cliff edges or icy slipways, dress appropriately.
If something doesn’t feel quite right… turn back. There’s no shame in choosing the safer route.

We’re always here, day or night, whatever the weather. But we’d much rather everyone gets home safe and warm.

If you ever see someone in difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Stay safe, stay warm,
From all of us at Whitby Coastguard 💙

🚨 Extreme fire risk in the North York Moors: Please consider your actions

The National Park is at extreme risk of wildfire and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service is already under considerable pressure.

The North York Moors can still be enjoyed safely, but extra caution is required.

You must NOT:

❌ Discard ci******es or matches anywhere, including from car windows along any road. Even a tiny spark can start an uncontrollable blaze.
❌ Light barbecues or campfires in the National Park, surrounding gardens, allotments, lay-bys, or any nearby open land or forest.
❌ Leave glass bottles or reflective litter, sunlight can ignite dry vegetation through them.

Our advice to visitors and community members regarding the wildfire at Langdale Forest/Fylingdales Moor is as follows:

🚒 Public risk remains low, but please stay away from the immediate area of the fire to allow emergency crews to work safely.
🏠 If you’re in an area directly affected by smoke, keep windows/doors closed and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity.
🔥 If you see any signs of smouldering or fire, call 999. Do not assume somebody else has done this.
👀 Be vigilant - challenge unsafe behaviour where you see it and set the right example.

Please check the Tide times!

Two bank holiday call outs for Whitby RNLI.

The crew were paged at 12.57pm to a report of four people cut off by the tide near the East Pier in Whitby.

The volunteers launched the inshore lifeboat but were not required as the casualties managed to climb over the rock armour to safety.

The crew performed a final check of the area before returning to station.

Three hours later the crew were tasked for a second time when a concerned member of the public reported a kayak in trouble off Sandsend.

The inshore lifeboat was launched again and located the kayak with two on board who were safe and well.

Andy Cass, a helm on the inshore lifeboat said: We would like to just take this opportunity as the town gets busier for the summer, to remind people to always check the tide times before walking on the beach.

Due to the nature of the steep cliffs and rock armour people can find themselves cut off very quickly and it is not always possible to reach safety.

Always carry a means of calling for help and if you do get into trouble dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.'

With the weather warming up North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service are giving advice if you're visiting the countryside.

Nationally there's already been double the amount of wildfires this year compared to the same period in 2022.

Here's how you can help to protect our beautiful countryside:
• Stick to designated paths and always leave gates and property as you find them
• Take your litter home, especially glass bottles and jars
• Discard of smoking materials carefully - never throw cigarette ends on the ground or out of car windows
• Don’t have campfires or barbecues in the countryside, instead look for safe designated areas - small fires can quickly spread especially when the ground is dry
• Park responsibly and make sure a fire engine or ambulance would be able to pass
• If you spot a fire in the countryside dial 999 and ask for the fire service
