There are rare moments when the weather becomes the main event.

This is one of them.

At temperatures like this, even small decisions become surprisingly important - where you sit, what you order, how long you stay.

The mistake is treating it as ordinary.

It isn’t.

There will be other evenings.

But very few that feel quite this un-British.

The Queens Oak sits firmly in that last category. Warm, effortless hospitality, food that tastes like it’s been given proper attention, and an atmosphere that doesn’t try too hard because it doesn’t need to.

It’s the sort of pub that turns ‘just popping in’ into ‘we’ll definitely do that again.’

Half term is often marketed as a break for children. In reality, it’s a hostage negotiation conducted with snacks and sun cream. ☀️🍦

Which is precisely why the smartest parenting decision this week may be beautifully selfish: find a seat in The Queen’s Oak pub garden, order something cold, and pretend the countryside walk beforehand was entirely about “family wellbeing” rather than earning yourself a pint in the sunshine.
