Ever wondered about the story behind this little elephant?

This statue commemorates one of Worthing’s strangest pieces of maritime history.

In November 1926, a baby elephant washed ashore. It’s believed he may have come from a cattle ship that sank off the coast of Deal, Kent.

The young calf was being transported as part of a travelling circus and sadly perished in the water. The elephant’s Mother was later pictured taking a stroll along Worthing beach.

Affectionately named “Jumbo” by locals, he now stands just off the beach next to Perch on the parade.

Next time you visit, make sure to say hello! 🐘
