Before Curious Coffee, I spent years in hospitality.

Front of house, back of house, slowly working into management.

I didn’t know it at the time, I was quietly dreaming.

Not a big, loud dream. Just a small one - a little place of my own one day.

Excellent coffee. Proper brownies. Probably so small that it would be takeaway only. I never really shared it with anyone.

I just didn’t think it was possible.

“What if people think I’m silly?”
“What if they all think I’m mad?”

After dreaming long enough, I’d start looking at vacant shops. Fantasising about where customers would sit, what the counter would look like, the decor, even the music we’d play. Before I knew it I was designing menus for my imaginary cafe.

Thinking about it now, it’s probably how most hospitality businesses start.

It took years. It wasn’t glamorous. In fact, in our first trading week we took about £30.

It’s taken a long time, an insane amount of hard work and probably most importantly - bringing the very best people in (we’d be in deep trouble if we didn’t have our dynamite team). The dream and the reality have never look more similar.

As usual, I’m not really sure what I’m getting at with this post.

Your dreams are a reflection of everything you care about.

Whatever your dream is - however big, however small, however far away it feels right now - keep dreaming. Don’t let it go quiet.

Take a small step towards it each day. Research it. Read about it. Watch a YouTube video from someone else who’s building a similar dream. Share your big, silly, mad dreams with all of your best cheerleaders.

You never know how close you already are.

Be Silly.

It’s proper cliche to bang on about how “running a business is hard” but sometimes you’ve gotta step back, take a breath and look around at what’s going on.

To some people we might just be a place to stop in for a hot drink & a chunk of brownie. But to others, we are a place where people can stop and reset their day or catch up with themselves when life is hectic.

It’s not easy to find great staff, and when your team isn’t functioning well it’s obvious to everyone

At Curious Coffee we’re incredibly lucky to have an absolutely dynamite team, who show up day after day with big smiles and beautiful warmth to all our customers (and each other). And hopefully it shows for everyone who visits us, from the regulars to the passers by.

There’s no real profound point to this post, just wanted to say something nice about our staff and how lucky we are to have them.
