it is with a heavy heart and a wave of mixed emotions that after 5.5 years i announce the upcoming closure of jean may, named after my dearest maternal grandma (婆婆).
this decision was not an easy one to make as to me, jean may is not just another french food addition to my home city of hong kong.
i have had the honour and privilege to work for and alongside some of the best chefs in the world. i learned not only how they cooked, also the way they ran their own restaurants from behind the stove, respected ingredients and seasonality, developed their teams, connected with their suppliers, created homes for those who walked through their restaurant doors, their deep love and respect for their craft... i wanted to bring all that i had learned from them and experienced with them back to this city to create a small home for those who enjoy food, wine and hospitality and also have young talents who love cooking and hospitality work with me. running jean may from behind the stove was what i know and my biggest passion and love.
jean may houses all the memories of the roller coaster rides of running a restaurant and all the people who have walked through the door who have touched our lives and whose lives we have had the privilege to be a part of, some of whom have become like family ❤️
i am very grateful for my team, everyone since day one, some of whom have become family, for your hard work, commitment and love.
and a very warm and heartfelt thank you to our guests, the reason why we do what we do day in and out, for your kind support over the last few years. it has been privilege to be a part of your lives and memories.
a special mention to the chefs in hong kong who have been most generous and supportive. thank you for the feeling of mentorship and comradery! 👨🏻🍳👩🏻🍳🫡❤️
we will have our last service on 22 march 2026, sunday and will be hosting a few celebratory collaborative events, stay tuned.
the doors to jean may, a french bistro in a beautiful little corner of wanchai on flower and fruit stalls-lined gresson street may be closing, but jean may will be around with something else in the making…
with love, gratitude and humility,
tiff
