逾越節的起源記載於聖經《出埃及記》，當耶和華要在施行第十災前向以色列民說：
「這血要在你們所住的房屋上作記號；我一見這血，就逾越你們。我擊打埃及地的時候，災殃必不臨到你們身上施行毀滅。」（出12:13）。
而神也吩咐他們要世世代代記念這事(參出12:14），於是，逾越節因此得名，也成為了猶太人三大節期之首。

逾越節是慶祝神的愛和大能，將祂的子民從仇敵的手中拯救出來，得著自由！
