As with all great things, there must be an end. Here at Velvet, we've come to the end of our road, but what a journey its been.

Through the year, we've seen our dear friends and guests celebrate birthdays, propose engagements, host wedding receptions, or just go all out crazy having fun. We hope that in our year at your service, we've been able to make all your memories just that little bit more special.

When one door closes, another opens, and as we close ours, so may another open for all of you.

Last week we highlighted the history behind the classic cocktail, the Negroni. It's predecessor, the Americano, first appeared in the 1860's under the name of Milano-Torino, in reference to the origins of its two components, Campari and Sweet Vermouth.

By the turn of the century, Italy became a popular tourist destination for Americans due to advances in individual wealth and transport technology. These Americans, who had never heard of Campari, or Vermouth, were incredibly fond of the Milano-Torino, and it quickly became a representative drink of the tourists who brought it home to the shores of America. The Italians renamed the cocktail in honor of their visiting neighbours from across the Atlantic, calling it the Americano

The Negroni first appeared in print in 1947, described by the famed writer Orson Welles in a letter to a magazine while working in Rome. Prior to that, this cocktail had enjoyed growing popularity for nearly 20 years, ever since a customer requested his Americano, then a popular cocktail, be given an extra kick by substituting soda water for gin.

Today, the Negroni embodies the very essence of Prohibition era cocktails, where the depth, aroma, and character of a drink reigned. With a Negroni, look for the burst of fresh citrus oils to highlight the harmony of bitter-sweet Campari and Sweet Vermouth.
