“Excellent, interesting, eccentric, charming and comfortable”
Reviewed October 8, 2013 NEW
We were looking for a place to come back to after a wedding, the wedding venue suggested Griesemount. We were expecting something functional but what we found was remarkable. Griesemount was built in 1817 by the Shakleton family (of South Pole fame). Although it is very close to main roads and to Naas, when you drive up the driveway you feel like you’ve entered a world that runs at a different pace to the 21st century.
You enter a huge house, decorated with Regency era sketches, Vanity Fair cartoons from the 19th century, souvenirs and ornaments from the far east, a series of wonderful bookcases, antique furniture and huge bay windows that look onto streams and (quite impressive looking) ruins. The owners couldn’t have been any more friendly or agreeable, in fact we almost would have preferred to spend our day chatting with them, strolling around their garden or relaxing while drinking tea, reading books and imagining we were living about 100 years’ ago.
Carolynn and Robert have created a wonderful, unique home. I have every intention of going back for a weekend, I would recommend their house highly,
