Calling all local or visiting artists!

Treat yourself to three hours of uninterrupted drawing this Friday in Listowel.
Whether you're looking to improve your observational skills, loosen your drawing style, or simply enjoy an evening creating alongside other artists, this untutored life drawing session offers a relaxed and welcoming space to do just that.
Life drawing is one of the best ways to develop confidence in drawing form, light, anatomy and expression.

The fearured image, is one of my own works from life, a reminder of why I keep returning to life drawing at every opportunity. There's nothing quite like drawing from a live model to sharpen your observation, improve your confidence, and deepen your understanding of the human form.

CUSTOMER IDENTIFIES SPELLING ERROR. LOCAL BUSINESS REFUSES TO CORRECT IT.

A lady came in today, ordered a coffee and informed us that 'loose' should have been 'lose'.

She was right.

We have enormous respect for the guardians of the English language. Without them, civilisation would collapse into rogue apostrophes, expresso, and signs advertising panini’s.

They are doing essential work.

But artists who cannot spell also deserve protection.

For generations, they have been hunted through classrooms by red pens, cornered by dictionaries and scorned over vowels that were added during periods of considerable emotional distress.

That persecution ends on Church Street.

An internal investigation found the extra 'o' guilty on all counts.

It will not be removed.

The lady was thanked for defending the English language.

The artist was thanked for endangering it.

We will not sacrifice an artist to save a vowel.

The sign remains.

CJ Collins opened the afternoon and quietly took control of the room.

Then Count Tornado arrived and took control of everything else.

What followed was funny, unpredictable and genuinely entertaining. He spoke to the audience, involved them in the performance and made the whole room feel part of it.

I was not entirely sure what was happening.

I don't think anyone did.

A brilliant afternoon from two very different performers.

Thank you to CJ Collins, Count Tornado and everyone who came along and gave them the audience they deserved.

Olive Stack Gallery has brought a professional life model from Alaska to Listowel.

Entirely legally, just don’t ask too many questions.

Keren Lowell is Olive’s artist in residence for July. She has worked as a life model in Colorado, Chicago and Alaska, and on Friday, 24 July, Olive is bringing her to St Patrick’s Hall for a three-hour untutored drawing session.

It is unsupervised.

You are responsible for your own misjudgements.

This is what Olive does really well. She brings serious artists to Listowel and then creates a way for people here to work with them.

The session is relaxed and open to all levels.

Bring your own materials and a willingness to begin before you feel entirely ready.

There are only twenty places.

A girl walked into the shop today.

She ordered an espresso and looked through the records.

A few minutes later, she placed a small pile on the counter and asked if we sold record players.

We do.

She was having friends over for wine and wanted some music for the evening.

I sold her the records.

I sold her the record player.

I was not invited.

Next Saturday at 3pm, Count Tornado will be playing live at The Kilmorna Collection.

He has been writing and performing his own songs for years, very much on his own terms. The top hat and cape are part of it, of course, but so are songs called Cats on Stilts, Electric Sewing Machine, Don’t Throw Rocks at My Door and Oblivion.

There really is nobody else quite like him.

Opening the afternoon will be singer-songwriter CJ Collins, and we are very pleased to have both artists joining us.

Olive Stack Gallery has a horrible habit of making people think they can do things.

I called into her studio to ask about Listowel Visual Arts Week, which starts at the end of July.

A harmless visit….

Ask a few questions. Smile when being spoken to. Leave with the information. Very professional.

Instead, she had me sitting in front of a canvas, holding a brush, doing what artists do.

This is Olive’s fault.

She has a way of removing the fear from art.

Not the skill.
Not the work.
Not the seriousness of it.

Just the fear.

From July 31st to August 9th, Olive Stack Gallery is running Listowel Visual Arts Week.

There are workshops in cyanotype printing, glass mosaic, micro mosaic jewellery, felt work, oil painting, willow lanterns, tone and colour.

There is life drawing.

There is plein air painting.

There are exhibitions.

There are visiting artists.

And, crucially, there is room for people who absolutely do not.

That is the part I like.

Because a lot of us talk ourselves out of these things.

We say we are not artistic.

We say we would not know where to start.

We say we would only make a mess.

Fine.

Make a mess.

Olive has spent years bringing artists from around the world into Listowel. They come here, live here, work here, and leave with Listowel in the work somewhere.

Now she is opening the door wider.

Not just for professional artists.

For anyone who is curious.

Anyone who used to draw.

Anyone who always wanted to paint.

Anyone who would like to try glass, print, felt, willow, colour, or simply sit in a room for a few hours and make something with their hands instead of scrolling themselves into a stupor.

I asked Olive, quite seriously, whether someone with no real artistic ability could take part.

She said yes.

No hesitation.

That tells you a lot about Olive.

She is patient.

She is generous.

And she has built something in Listowel that deserves to be full.

So book something.

Bring someone.

Go on your own.

Pick the workshop that makes you nervous.

That is probably the one.

Last night was a huge success.

Thank you to everyone who came along to see Brian Hackett’s exhibition, spent time with the work and helped make the opening feel like a proper occasion.

I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Once the doors were closed and everyone had gone home, Brian and I had a quiet drink among the sculptures and agreed that the evening had gone rather well.

The exhibition continues at The Kilmorna Collection throughout July.
