A Special Encounter in Ballyhoura Forest This Morning

This morning, while enjoying a peaceful walk through the beautiful Ballyhoura Forest, I was lucky enough to come across one of Ireland’s most elusive mammals – a pine marten.

For a few moments it stopped, looked back at me, and allowed me to capture this photograph before disappearing silently into the forest. It’s not something you see every day.

The pine marten (Martes martes) is a native Irish woodland predator, roughly the size of a domestic cat, although its long body and bushy tail make it look larger. It can be identified by its rich brown coat, large rounded ears and distinctive cream or yellow bib on its throat.

Once common throughout Ireland, pine marten numbers declined dramatically during the 19th and 20th centuries due to deforestation, habitat loss and persecution. By the 1900s they had disappeared from many parts of the country.

Thankfully, legal protection and the recovery of Ireland’s woodlands have helped them make a remarkable comeback. Today they’re becoming an increasingly familiar sight in forests like Ballyhoura, although they’re still rarely seen because they’re shy, secretive and mostly active at dawn, dusk and during the night.

Pine martens are fascinating animals. They’re excellent climbers and spend much of their time in the trees, feeding on small mammals, birds, insects, eggs and berries. Interestingly, they’ve also played a role in helping Ireland’s native red squirrel. Research suggests that areas with healthy pine marten populations often see fewer grey squirrels, giving the red squirrel a better chance to thrive.

It’s moments like this that remind us how fortunate we are to have such incredible wildlife right on our doorstep.

Have you ever been lucky enough to spot a pine marten in the wild?
